Coastal Foraging on the low tide line for delicious edibles is one of our favourite things to do. Exploring rock pools and searching for Crabs, Clams and other sea life is not only fascinating but is a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors. Then after collecting what we needed for a meal we clean them on the shore. Then go for a delicious family cook up

Where we lived in Virginia the waters were loaded with oyster beds in the rivers and estuaries. Like Lynnhaven oysters, York River or a Rappahannock oyster. We would buy a bushel from local watermen, clean 'em up, lay on a metal tray, pop them in a hot oven, bake them until shell pops open, not to overcook as they would turn tough and rubbery ( no good. Melt a butter and lemon sauce and just dip each one in the sauce and eat right from the shell. You could also bake a mussel like that. Never did as hard to find any mussels there people never messed with them

Thanks for Mr. Jim-s great cooking with seafood ideas. Sorry I can-t get fresh seafood. Live to far from Gulf Coast of Texas. I would like for you to do salmon anyway you like to. thanks again for Fish Locker for -farm to table- camping food ideas and most importantly your camp wood stove. All my family is BSA. One son and wife are still active in program as instructors rock climbing. Thanks again.

I like to eat mussels and only choose them at the local Asian buffets around here but can't imagine having access to all those clinging onto rocky shores, just to harvest them on a low tides. What I would do is make a fresh mussel stew? Is that one way to eat them other than boil in a pot until shell pops open?

Where and when do you usually find scallops?
Do they have season or you can find them any time during the year?
I went to Cornwall 2 weeks ago, and apart from mussels I couldn't see anything else on the beach, not even small shells, absolutely 0.
Probably not knowledgeable as you -
Cheers

Even though, having grown up fishing fresh and salt water here in NW Florida, I understand it is not proper to ask a fisherman where they are biting, can you tell me what section of coast you are foraging? My wife is Belgian and she drools over any seafood especially shellfish. Thanks, Martino

Wow! That looked delicious! I'm gonna try that. I like to eat mine raw. So good. But when I feel like it. I fry up some crushed garlic in butter with sweet Thai chilli sauce in a big wok and put the mussels in and cover with the lid until cooked then serve. Yumm. Or cream chowder.

Did you go to school to learn all that you know about the shore and animals or is your knowledge from just being a lover of the shore/sea/animals? Or I guess a combo of both. Also, how old is your little guy? Mine are all grown, but we have grandkids now. Love it!

I find the way they do it quite interesting, but it's still laborious, in Brazil we cook it beforehand and take it out of the skin so it's better to taste, with the skin's twisty and less practical.
