wow this is awesome! my father, george baxter, was a guide on the lake in the 70s, we practically grew up there in camp three. he had his picture on field and stream, a discover ontario poster, a couple other hunting and guiding magazines. anyone want to send him mail, he lives in RAITH Ontario, general delivery. he still has his mind even though he is in his 70s. he still putters around keeps himself busy, had a stroke a few years back but still gets around. so send him a letter or give him a call. he would be glad to hear from you!

Having discovered Best Island on a fly-in during the Summer of 1979 and visiting Wendell's wonderful cabins, it is truly a shame that the so called 'Heritage Foundation' has let these properties fall into such a sad state. The board of directors should be flogged. In honesty, I wish I had never found this website. The Canadian Government should be found guilty of neglect that such an historic place as Best Island and Wendell's efforts have fallen into such disrepair. So very disheartening to see. Tears and lament!

I was first there with an Outward Bound trip in 1978, then with a friend in 1979. I let saw hime in August 1980 and when we returned found he had died. There was a float plane there with several people who wouldn't let us land. We found out later there was a dispute over his possessions. I visited the site one more time two years later.
Ian Yolles from the Outward Bound school told me they had sent people in with food several times over the last few years during the winter. He was living largely on oatmeal.

This is awesome to see again. I was here a few years back while on month long canoe trip with a group from Camp Queen Elizabeth. Wish I had the space on my camera at the time and the battery to film this, but so glad someone did. Hoping I can eventually go back & its still standing. Such an amazing place

I visited this site with outward bound in 1998. we did a pretty substantial clean up of random debris from storms and nature in general. it's a shame to see this place in such terrible shape. it was in pristine condition in 98.

I grew up with this awesome man as my babysitter, I played and walked the area, I was there when he was in the process of building the snail house, I remember his daughter would come to visit once in awhile.
