As fall deepens, the time draws near to winterize your outboard engine and fuel system. A few simple precautions ensure peak engine performance next spring binkwood: Obviously this is an advertisement for Seafoam and must be taken with a grain (or bag) of salt. What Seafoam DOES DO is help reduce carbon deposits in engines, there are several independent tests that prove (and actually show through engine disassembly before and after) this to be true to various extents. The degradation of various parts in the fuel system is a tremendous threat reformulated fuels pose to boaters (and any other small engine. Another tremendous threat reformulated fuels pose is the loss of octane levels in gasoline over time that will cause an overabundance of unburned fuel in the combustion process. Both of these threats can be extremely costly to boaters and leave you stranded and/or keep you off the water. Seafoam DOES NOT keep gasoline from loosing octane levels. If the octane level in your fuel drops too low your engine WILL detonate! Obviously bigger engines are more susceptible to detonation due to improperly burning fuels than smaller engines are but its not a good idea to use compromised fuels in any engine. Seafoam (or any other additive) does not prevent phase separation, you can test this yourself by using a clear jar of gasoline, adding water, and then adding Seafoam (or any other additive, the water and the fuel stay separated. A water separating filter is the best protection against this, not a fuel additive. The safest thing is to use non-ethanol gasoline during the fishing season whenever possible and drain your fuel at the end of the year or during any time the gasoline has been sitting more than 30 days. Seafoam DOES have some value as a -de-carbing- additive and it is one of the most recognized products for doing so. What Seafoam (or any other additive) DOES NOT DO is eliminate corrosion of; metal, rubber, and plastic parts found within any fuel system caused by ethanol. It is; A DISSERVICE TO SEAFOAM CUSTOMERS TO INCINUATE THIS PRODUCT WILL; ELIMINATE CORROSION, PREVENT PHASE SEPARATION, OR PREVENT OCTANE LEVELS FROM DROPPING OVER TIME WITHIN THE FUEL SYSTEM CAUSED BY ETHANOL GASOLINE WITH THE USE OF THIS PRODUCT! IMO play it safe and dont trust advertising claims that have not been validated with proof.
