Great video Jay. I don't think of myself as old, but I did start ice fishing as a kid in the '80s, so have been at this for a while. Anyway, after about a 10-year layoff, I got back into ice fishing last year and it was the first time I used a sonar. And I cannot stress enough how much better ice fishing is with a sonar. So much so that I don't think I'd ever go ice fishing without one now. Just the ability to see if there is anything going on down the hole or not, so you can make decisions whether to move or stay, and the excitement of 'playing' with fish even if they don't bite adds such a dimension to ice fishing, rather than just sitting there hoping something happens. It's a must-have for ice fishing!

Hey Jay, on the topic of batteries, I have been running my flasher off the same lithium battery as my cordless drill. I'm a carpenter and have many Milwaukee tools so the drill auger just made sense to me. I don't own any but have friends with heated jackets from Milwaukee and found they sell an adapter to use 18v batteries with the 12v jackets. I bought one and made an adapter (with inline fuse) to plug my flasher into it and I can go all day on one 9ah M18 battery. I always have a charged battery or three on hand when I want to go fishing! Better yet, there's also a usb charge port built in that I can use for other things.

Nice & informative video sir. Only thing to add would be that; Flashers can be more than 800. 00 like 1000. 00 depending on model/setup like top end vex. Sonars could be found for 200. 00 for low end/beginner like lowrance. Cameras are cool, entertaining (especially when you have beginner or especially kids) but flasher is better/make you better/more successful once you know how to use/read one.

I started with no flasher, and bought a Marcum LX3, and moved up to a Helix 5, then Panoptix, and now the LIvescope. I know it's big but it's so worth the price. Year round use, and all the features are great. Like you said though starting off with just a flasher is key because going blind is no bueno! Thanks again Jay awesome series can't wait for next video.

One other thing to say about the Aqua View on smaller lakes weve caught so many more bluegill/crappie/pan fish because you can see that the fish has it BEFORE you feel any strike. This results in more catches (amazing for family-type fishing for the young kids, etc) and also better for the fish you release with easy, shallow hook sets in the mouth.

For anyone new to ice fishing or all fishing for that matter the garmin striker 4 is an awesome unit for ice fishing and for a boat or kayak rowboat whatever you fish out of and its $100 you can also buy an ice transducer for it which I recommend but the regular transducer will get you by on the ice aswell

So, my Garmin Striker 4 Plus CV fish finder has the flasher, a GPS, charting all built into it and was only $180. is it lower quality in some way? I'm just wondering because everything you showed was more expensive and the $200 equipment you showed had fewer features than the Striker 4 Plus CV at $180.

Cameras add an element of buck fever to ice fishing. It allows you to watch fish interact with your baits while being clueless. Its just like watching big beasts walking towards your stand after being called in by a grunting cadence. Gets the blood pumping for sure.

i bet i catch 75% more fish now that i run a Helix 7. i map lakes out during the summer months so i can return in the winter. I also see fish on the graph when fishing and i am able to adjust my tactic based on the fish. Total game changer!

I invested in a mid to low end Garmin striker 4 last winter. I am very pleased by it. Brings confidence to my fishing. GPS flasher mode and other great options. Only downside no cone transducer just a boat /kayak hookup model
