great series for the beginners. I think ice fishing is one of the easiest ways to get into fishing. Any budget can start and the sky is the limit. A spoon of line, some terminal tackle, minnow, and a branch is all it takes to start. Get a cheap auger and you are off to ice fishing. Or get ya a big ass hunt, power auger, fish finder, jaw jacker, and your off. You can access the whole lake and not just a small section of shore.

We had a warden give us an issue 2 or 3 years back. He said my cousin's tip-ups weren't within his immediate control. We live in PA, and have grown up being use to those that taught us having 1 or 2 way out, something like 100 yards-ish. We never had an issue with harming fish. To his defense, that is a little far, but we never had an issue.

You are doing a great job on this series! I am learning a lot of different techniques and information. Thank you for doing this. I would like to ask you what you think of the Windlass tip-up? Or have you ever tried this device? I live in Wyoming and we can get some crazy ass 0 mph - 50 mph winds here in the winter. Thanks man!

Take a rookie - yes! In many ways, ice fishing is the perfect fishing introduction. Warm tent, don't have to worry about casting, line tangles, snags, etc. I've been taking kids out ice fishing for the past 10 years with an Outdoor Ed. class that I teach, and it's such a joy to see a kid catch their first fish!

These work with rod and reel or tip ups enjoyable. fishing recommend its good for keeping snow out of the hole and to greatly slow hole freezing. They are not heavy so need to be held down by tip up or some snow/ice shavings if windy. Have not had them freeze down even when placed in wet ice shavings.

I ended up making a few diy hook setters like a jawjacker. Made them out of pvc pipe. The first day out I caught more fish on mine than my buddy has ever caught on his actuall jaw jacker.
He had me make him up one after.
