You need to watch some casting videos and practice casting in your front yard. And don't worry about slapping the line on the water, we all started out doing that. Everybody tangles and catches trees occasionally. Bugging for bass, with a fly rod is fun.

You need to detach that reel and rotate 180. Reel handle on the left and line coming off the bottom of the reel. The clip of your saltwater hook up, that rig was set up properly.
