I'm a beginner in bushcraft and woodcraft so I'm vlogging my experience so you can learn how to practice bushcraft with me. Learning how to make fire with tinders and ferrocerium rod (or Fire Steel) is a very reliable skill that will make you a better outdoorsman. Freddie: Vaseline with cotton balls are the best tinder you can make yourself. They work awesome and stay lit long enough to get your fire going. Glad to see you doing this, good job Mora knives are the best budget blade you can get, and they all have a 90 degree spine to spark your ferro rod.

Loved this episode brother! Love learning survival skills. I have so many firestarters. I keep one in all my camping, hunting, and bugout bags. If u haven't heard of it yet, look into the Black Beard firestarter. Comes with braided tinder rope. Its awesome and takes very little of the tinder to start. Just a suggestion. Your doin an awesome job and would love to see more stuff like this. Best of luck and wishes to u and the Lake Life Fam!

cheat up date:
Soak cotton balls in Vaseline and they become waterproof. When you go to use one just tear into the middle of the ball and expose the dry cotton fibers, add spark and it will light immediately. On a small cotton ball it should burn for around 60 seconds allowing your tender to ignite.

Great video LFG. Several years ago I felt sorry watching you try to start a fire. Sent you a fatwood kit in the mail. Not sure if you ever received it. Am glad to see you improving your skill set. Everyone should practice these skills, and would love to see more videos like this.

Learning outdoor minimalism and survival, will greatly benefit anyone hunting and fishing. Pack less gear, cause you can make do with the help of nature and natural materials, therefore you can pack lighter, go further: )

When starting your fire, try putting the tip of your knife on the surface angled above your tender. Then pull your ferro rod while keeping the knife stationary. That technique Really lets you direct the sparks.

You said you dont have many trees that feather stick well.
But you have cedar trees. Thats one of the best feather stick trees. Long thing curls, along with the oil in cedar. Quite flameable.

I was just about to comment about Fat wood, or Fat Lighter as we call it here in GA, when LFG mentions it. Good on you for knowing about it.
