Man I had a near identical experience as you did when I got my first compound 2 years ago. Practiced all summer, felt really good and confident. Bow season comes and I get a shot at a doe and maaan every single thing I practiced just went out the window and I whiffed the shot. I was so disappointed in myself but luckily there were several does and one wandered back over to about 20 yards and I redeemed myself and put down my first deer with a bow.
Obviously your situation is much more difficult with the prim bow and hopefully you're able to redeem yourself too! Appreciate the respect you show for the animal in not wanting to wound it and knowing when to back out and get some more practice in. Best of luck from Indiana!

Bro as a guy who's been shooting traditional and primitive for the last 36 years let me tell you something.
If you can hit a coffee cup or lay an arrow next to it at 20 yd, and then completely missed a deer, the problem is not your ability to shoot the bow accurately.
That's the puzzle you have to solve.
No bow is quiet or fast enough to beat a deer's response. If he got away, he got away. Likewise, if you hit the blind with the limb tip, or anything else you can point to directly.
But, if you missed an entire deer, when you can usually hit a coffee cup no problem, what's up with that? I've done it, myself. When you figure that out, you'll kill that buck.
Don't give up! Your ancestors did it! You can do it!

Stick with your selfbow, turn that hat around and pick your spot and it ll turn out a lot different. When I started shooting trad I still had a compound and when things got tough I always jumped back to my wheels. My last buck I shot was at 18 yards with my elite and all I could say in the moment was I wish I d had my recurve. Now that I m on the same journey into primitive bow making and hunting I HAD to get rid of my crutch or I knew I would continue to lean on it and never hit my goals in primitive archery. Stay focused brother, you got this

All fun and games. just shoot one with a gun. much better for the animal. not another deer running around with a arrow in the behind. I get its like a cool challenge but its also very selfish and not caring for the animal when u have better stuff to hunt them with then a bow that is made by a amateur. I dont get ur rules in de us anyways. ur probably allowed to even hunt with tannerite over there.
If u were to reattemt i would do it in anther 5 or 10 years. like another 100 bows and u will be really ready. now ur just impatience.

Stick with the self-bow, you're in a target rich environment so getting a deer isn't going to be a problem. My suggestion go with guile suit instead of a blind in that very same spot. Those deer are gonna come back to that feeder forever, so you know where your shot would be, set your camera on that spot and only shoot the deer when it gets into the camera frame. The blind looks confining too me for what you're trying to do. Remember the Indians didn't have a pop up blind.

Byron ferguson use to make and shoot straight bows. He was the best trick shoot I ever saw. His arrows had big floppy feathers and were tuned to the bow. A rest, nock and real feathers will help to keep your arrows from going array. An arrow with hard plastic feathers will push the point down and to the right. Nock and a good rest will help contain that. That fixed my issues with a recurve along with a sight.

I ve been shooting trad bows for the past couple season and been lucky enough to harvest a few deer with it. I believe some of your inconsistencies are in the anchor point due to a short draw in the self bow. I also found a draw clicker to help a ton when practicing a repeatable draw. Please don t put to trad gear down! It s the best rush when that arrow finally hits its target!

Nice job on making your bow. One thought. Are you using field tips when you practice on shooting your bow? Or due you use your broadhead tips you made? I would use your broadheads to practice so you can perfect making your broadheads. Just from watching your video when you showed your second shot again your arrow really look like it was dancing. Just a thought. Keep it up sir.

Making your own arrows and using the same broadheads help to match the bow you made primitive hunting is primitive you gotta go 100% in the bow and arrow scheme, love the drive of these videos! My dad shot a recurve for alot of years and made alot of arrows of his own growing up in New Mexico I've seen my dad harvest elk, muledeer and turkey with his own made bow!

It's hard for me to give advice. So let's go with a suggestion practice shooting your bow out of that blind you're canting your bow more than usual because you're afraid to hit the blind this will throw your shot off and canting your bow too much will give you a stronger grip on your bow and that also will throw your shot off don't give up you're doing great

Have you set up your training out of your blind with the camera the same way you have it when hunting? Somehow I missed part one, am going to go back and watch it now. I know in practice you have free range of motion whereas like you said, in the blind with the camera was cramped. Great video and keep your head up, you're a great woodsman, you will figure it out.

The only complete legit outdoorsman in the googan squad! Flair is knowledgeable but doesnt have the respect for nature. Lunkers thinks he, s a tournament bass pro. John b is a good fisherman, doesn't hunt. 1 rod knows almost nothing about being an outdoorsman, but fakes it pretty good. Peric didnt want to be a puppet. And we wont even talk about logo.

Shot traditional for many years. Made my own bows for many years. And just learned something from an old traditional shooter. I always struggled with getting consistently tight groups and the old man told me it's all arrow spine. Properly and equally spined arrows are the key to shooting consistently tight groups. Look into that. Love the video!

You need two years of practice minimum on traditional. People that are successful have been doing it for most of there archery careers. Most never touch a compound. It ll come but don t risk an un ethical shot and injury an animal. Just not worth it. But I think you realize it so I praise you for that. Most wouldn t never admit it.
