Blues ARE trash fish. They are extremely oily and VERY fishy tasting.
We in the mid-Atlantic also get large runs of them, early spring and late fall, mixed in with striped bass aka Rockfish. Blues on top, striped bass below.
The only way they are palatable is by soaking in milk over night or smothering them in Italian dressing and broiling on the grill. They will stink up your house when cooked.
Small runs of Blues on the surface, we call Snapper blues. They'll hit anything shiny, so a spoon is a great lure for them. Heavy leader required as the teeth are as bad or worse than barracuda.
Bon appetite.

Up in Rhode Island they're snapper blues at 1 - 3 lbs, and the big ones are just blues. Tons of big guys. Catch all you want (and often when you dont want.
I love these fish. Great fighters, crazy acting, crazy eaters. You catch them off the bottom, the top and anywhere in between.
I grew up eating them and never got their bad reputation. A bit oily, kinda soft, but unique. Not crazy fishy. Some folks dont mind fish that tastes like fish. Great smoked, great chowder fish, good in a lot of ways. They sell for cheap here, but they'll sell fresh

Listen to me and listen NOW. I first bought a bluefish at a fish market many years ago. I researched the best way to cook them on the Internet and almost exclusively saw that they were considered a trash fish because they're a very bloody fish and taste was considered very gamey. BUT. I also noticed a recipe that said to marinade the bluefish in milk/buttermilk for 24-48 hours before preparing. OMG, after baking with tomatoes, onion, and lemon slices, IT WAS DELICIOUS!

Yellow Eyed Devils. Suck for your terminal tackle, but one hell of a shoreline based or an inshore fighting fish. Razor sharp teeth. Saw one take the tip of a finger off another fisherman once. They do taste pretty good. Been catching & eating them since the mid 70's. Not sure where the trash fish moniker originated. They are a little oily, but so are mackerel. They make for awesome fish cakes. The tasty ones are the juveniles, called snappers.

Back in VA, used to run a homeless house. State gave us Taylor's Blues a lot!
Horrid fish. Lol
I thawed enough to feed 40, plus samples. I filleted them all, grabbed some frying pans and started searing chunks in various spices.
Once several guys agreed on a spice blend, I went to town. Nobody knew it wasn't some kind of white fish.
Treat it right.
Now to watch the video.

Gator blues, haven't heard that expression since I was a kid fishing with my dad circa 1985, and the little blues from the beginning of the video we called cocktail blues here in New Jersey. Maybe not the best eating fish, but one hell of a fight. Btw Vic what's up with the fishmonger filleting bud, driftboat those blues fast and easy, their ribs aren't bad like Stripers

When I eat anything from the ocean, I want to feel like I have licked the bottom of the ocean. I LOVE that briny flavor. I have always LMAO when people ask, does it taste fishy? It's a F-ing fish, I want it to taste fishy
I have never had it but would love to try it, it looks GREAT to me.
Happy NEW YEAR! Kiddos

I'm 59 and 40 years ago we used to catch slammer blues. We would go on Miss Chris in Cape May NJ at night. You got a giant canvas bag to put your fish in. When the bite started it was non stop. Bluefish were all giants. Pool winner was usually over 30 pounds. Your arms got tired after a hour of constant reeling.

yeah ive kept small bluefish before, 14 inches here in tx, the next day they definetely got mushier then the first, probably also because they were in fresh water ice as well as i never knew you werent suppose to keep salt fish in fresh water because it draws the salts out of the fish making it softer and mushier

And yes they will chop your finger off. They don't have big teeth but they interlock like a piranha and those eyes you talked about put one on the beach and walk a circle around him and he's watching you and when you try to grab that hook with your fingers he will bite you on purpose.

Sometimes the bloodline is the best part and brings a new journey in fishing and cooking. The bonita in Hawaii they take the bloodline and smoke, dry or grill it. Its very damn good and if marinated or seasoned or unseasoned it all has different tastes that to me personally are all amazing.

Viktor, another great vid. I fish mostly Cape Cod and Islands. Fresh bluefish is staple of many restaurants in the area. I would just add that they are toothy critters for sure. Grilled fish sandwich is best but they are wicked good when smoked too. OK Best keep up good work.

So back in 2010 we had a massive pile of those big ones miles offshore in the Gulfstream off the Keys. We were Dolphin fishing in May and they tore our stuff up for a couple days which was weird. Only seen it once but it was crazy catching Bluefish over 2000 ft of water

What a feeding frenzy! Thousands of them. The drone footage with the regular video combined makes an awesome footage. I've never considered bluefish as a dinner fish; however, after this video, I want to try it. Thank you for restoring my faith in bluefish.

Interesting that you consider them a trash fish over there. We call them Tailor in Australia and all along the lower two thirds of the east coast they're a premium beach fishing target, the idea of them being considered lesser species is bizarre to me

As always Vic, you produce interesting, entertaining, quality content. The sammich looked delicious. I grew up in Boca in the 70's and used to head to Blowing Rock for the bluefish run but we never caught them that big.

Great video Vik! Sandwich looked very tasty! It’s definitely true on trash cooks. Cooked and handled properly, anything can be made delicious. Some people are just taught to be snobs on some things.
Thanks for sharing!
