Custom AMD RX 6800 XT Strix vs. Nitro+ & Merc Overclocking Recap

We overclocked several AMD RX 6800 XT custom cards, and now we're recapping the stream results. Features ASUS RX 6800 XT Strix, Sapphire Nitro+, & XFX Merc 319. This is a recap of our live overclocking stream the other day. It was fun to work on these AMD cards, especially since we left them stock and didn't put them under extreme cooling. It can be fun to test stuff as is and without modifications, and it's a nice break from the regular LN2 streams. We still need to work towards doing full reviews of these GPUs; please remember that peak performance in overclocking doesn't mean the card is better or worse than the others. A lot more matters, like cooler efficiency, price, sizing and convenience, repairability, and other factors that we cover in our full reviews. This should just be looked at as a recap of a fun stream.

G'day Steve,
just thought I'd show people how crazy pricing can be in Australia, this is list prices of RX6800/6800XT for Scorptec where I shop in Sydney,
Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 6800 1109AUD
Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 6800 XT 1269AUD
Gigabyte Radeon RX 6800 GAMING OC 1299AUD
ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6800 OC 1349AUD
MSI Radeon RX 6800 GAMING X TRIO 1399AUD
ASRock Radeon RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming D 1449AUD
Gigabyte Radeon RX 6800 XT GAMING OC 1499AUD
ASRock Radeon RX 6800 XT Taichi X 1499AUD
ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 6800 XT OC 1599AUD
MSI Radeon RX 6800 XT GAMING X TRIO 1599AUD
ASUS ROG Strix LC Radeon RX 6800 XT OC 1799AUD
Not only is the Sapphire RX6800XT Nitro+ 530 cheaper than the Strix but it is cheaper than the other partners RX6800s
Scorptec don't carry Powercolor, but PCCG had the PowerColor Radeon RX 6800 XT Red Devil Limited Edition 1299AUD

Guys ... the world is not ending because you can't buy a GPU. I've been trying since release of the 3080 to get one for a decent price, failing every time. It's frustrating with Cyberpunk coming on the 10th and the coming Christmas Holidays, I get it.
But GN reviewing cards is still a good thing. Once prices will normalize again (and seeing the 3060ti stock lasting, they might) we have all the information we need to buy just the model that is best/we need. I would rather have them show me which cards are good and which once are duds than complain about seeing something I can't buy right now.
I can't buy that car I see on Jay Leno's Garage either but it is still nice to watch :P

Heads-up: We're heading into a really crazy time of year for us and will need to make a lot of tough choices as to what gets covered this month and what doesn't. We'd like to hear from you in the comments whether you want us to prioritize partner card reviews, console thermal testing on the Xbox, cooler/case reviews, or just different content. We want to cover it all, but there will be the usual holiday slowdowns and other factors that limit our capacity a little more than usually. Team members will be taking time off here and there, as you'd expect, and so we need to be more choosy about content coverage. Please let us know what you'd like to see. Thank you!

Still sucks AMD capped the overclocking in a range they should have been able to go higher than. Really sucks with the 6900XT as there is a pretty good chance it could easily get to 3.3MHz with LN2 considering the 68XT can hit 2.8Mhz without LN2 basically maxing out the clock cap. Basically ruins it for beating the overclocking world records where AMD could have gained a lot of hype from getting farther in. Let's be honest, the nobodies will see someone like Derbauer using an AMD GPU and think it must be the best for them as well. It is a trickle down effect.

I think prioritizing cooler and case reviews would be best considering the amount of data we have on existing GPUs. Generally speaking we can ballpark partner cards, and exact data can wait until there's actually stock to purchase with the gained knowledge.
Not only would coolers and cases be available, but it would be a nice break from the silicon saturation we've had recently. Console thermal testing would be a close second, and as always any other content you'd want to do would be welcome.

Isn't the Red Devil on this vid the Limited Ed vers ?, if it's the one from the earlier review vid it is, that one is dearer than the standard Red Devil and Red Dragon, I'm not sure on the clock speeds though as I can only find speed for the Limited ed, I wonder if the AIBs have all sent reviewers the top model they do, meaning we get reviews and scores only to find the cards we buy are slower, but won't know unless we benchmark them aswell.

Thanks for posting. I don't understand why you reviewers don't send the products back and refuse to talk about them until they are available to the average consumer. The suppliers are having fun getting you guys to promote product that don't exist. your all looking foolish showcasing product for people that don't care about the average consumer. I realize you wouldn't get free stuff but who are you loyal too? , the suppliers or your viewers.

I am really interested in the comparison between the XFX and the Powercolor cards, those are usually the higher-end AMD GPUs available here in Brazil. I'm still running an XFX RX480 GTR that buildzoid labeled the PCB as Not shit and so far, it was great card, especially for its price. Overclocked decently, great thermals, quiet card and the fans are easily replaceable not even requiring screws.

The Strix annoys me. I get that they use a 240 to keep it compatible with smaller cases, but I really want a 280 or 360 instead. It just feels like a half-hearted solution that would continue to annoy me by being louder/less efficient than it could have been.
I hope Aorus makes a bigger AIO version.

To hell with tough choices, take what you have that's most/easiest to complete and flow with it. Try to wind down a little before the holidays.
Or have Patrick make videos in tandem with you!
