Intel Has Become AMD: Best Gaming CPUs Are Last Gen

Intel has officially become AMD -- for now, at least. Some of the best gaming CPUs currently available are Intel's previous generation, thanks to new price cuts and R5 5600X pricing. Historically, Intel has been stubborn in lowering the prices on older generations of CPUs as new ones roll out. AMD took advantage of this to lower prices on its own older CPUs at the end of their lifespan, making some CPUs good value choices later on. AMD did this with the R7 2700, 2700X, R5 2600, the R5 1600 AF (a rebrand of the 2600), and the R7 3700X. We were unimpressed initially with the price positioning of some of these, like the 3700X and 2700X (especially), but as the price dropped, they became some of the best choices. Now that Intel s newest 11-series processors have set a new bar in disappointment, the 10th generation of CPUs can finally shine. The i7-10700 and 10700K are worth note, as is the 10900 (and K) for a cheaper 10-core option. The 11700K has also already dropped in price, although not enough.

In my most recent build I went with the i7-11700K because it was still cheaper than the 5800x (it's always marked up in Canada for some reason) and I didn't have to deal with the potential hassle of flashing the BIOS for compatibility (plus I found the Z590 motherboards to be more worth it than even some B550 boards).
I play games at 4K too so losing a few frames is pretty unlikely. And I'm more than happy with the single core performance, I didn't need to spend an unnecessary 200 premium for the i9's features. Productivity is honestly pretty rare for me so I don't think I'll need the extra cores from Ryzen 9 at all. I still get PCI-E gen 4 and that's good enough for me.

Well , its true , since Intel 10 Gen prices are down , it may be interresting as Budget Option , but if you want to upgrade the CPU later mostly you cant do it , you have to buy a new MoBo .
AM4 is nearly EOL now with Zen 6/7 in 5 nm is on sight , mabe 2nd half of next year . There maybe an Zen5 refresh in 6 nm ( warhol ) with slightly higher IPC and clock speeds for AM4 ( B550/X570 ) . I can still use a Zen3 on my old B350 and on my current B450 i could upgrade to Zen5 if i wanted to , but my current 3900x ( 479 + 2 Games ) with sync IF1900 / DDR4 3800 is still way enough for me . I wait for the next price drop , if the 5900x drop into the 400-450 range , maybe i upgrade .

One thing you have to take into account is motherboard prices, I know when I was upgrading and considering between Intel and AMD, the Intel Z490 ITX boards were 100 more than the AMD B550 ITX and boards which pushed me to AMD. Intel didn t even allow memory overclocking on their midrange boards, so you were forced into high end Z490 where with AMD you could go with cheaper mid-range B550 and that offset the total price of the upgrade.

Forget Micro Center pricing. Convenient if you want a narrative to stick to the tram line. You can actually do what I and my sons and son-in-law are going to do....take a field trip to a Micro Center. For us that is Denver or Chicago, but who wants to go to Chicago? Still, in all fairness, this is the first time I've considered Intel in a while for builds for other people who want to save money.

You can also take a look at geizhals.eu hardware section, if you want to look at European historical pricing data!
They have filters for almost any brand, and the pricing data always goes as far back as possible, visible for all users.
It's not a partpicker but it is a really important price comparator for especially Germany, but the EU itself as well!

The older ones had MORE cores, people buy the part that has HIGER Numbers .... god literally even the Bike Industry can't find a solution to this. This is why 29 exists. More cores are absolutely almost certainly not always better, just pretty must are always better. Obviously we will ride on 32 pretty soon and 29 will be for your 8 years olds.

Recently bought my sibling a 9700k when it went on sale to do an in-socket upgrade from a 9100f. The added cost of a new motherboard for a 10th/11th gen or Ryzen was just not worth it. They have a 1440p display now too, so the benefit of the newer CPU's would have been negligible.

I have a i9-10900KF paired with 3600mhz ram and rtx 3080 and couldnt be happier. Got all my parts on sale and its a good upgrade VS my 5820k/1080ti. I was going with AMD at first... but the next day I wanted to finalize my cart they all went out of stock. :-/

Entertaining. This is why for most consumers its probably best to keep using whatever works...until it doesn't. And then just buy whatever is good at that point. The mfgs don't make upgrading very easy or convenient, so why should we before we have to?

All the time I was planning my 10400 based PC everyone was saying how AMD was better. Then I built a 3600 based PC and now everyone s saying Intel is better
Still...I went for B550 so at least I can upgrade to Zen 3 one day, which look decent.
