Best We've Tested - Gundam x ASUS Power Supply Benchmarks

The ASUS Gundam 850W PSU is actually one of the best we've tested, but the Gundam elements are sorely lacking and insufficient for the price. The PSU itself is top-notch, though. This review of the ASUS Gundam ROG Strix 850G Gundam Edition PSU tests the power supply for efficiency, build quality, protection circuits, and more. A big aspect of the PSU is the actual Gundam branding, since the PSU itself is an existing ASUS PSU that's been rebranded (and is built on top of a Seasonic platform). Blargh: I feel like the removable RGB plate for the PSU isn't necessarily a bad thing. People are paying a premium for the Gundam brand, but when they eventually have to replace the PSU due to failure or having to upgrade, they can easily slap the plate on the new PSU. The location and quality of the wire is pretty disappointing though.

I work as a Product Designer and I can already tell why this Led panel is an external part that gets attached with magnets.
I am pretty sure the Designer envisioned this integrated into the PSU, but once you include changes that go beyond color and accessories in a product for a limited edition, it results in project management and Sourcing losing their shit, even if the changes do not cost a lot of money.
It might not be cheaper, but it is a lot easier for them to tell the manufacture of the PSU to just make it white and then they are ordering all the accessories from vendors that do small production runs. That way they do not have to modify the supply chain of the Psu and everything is pretty straightforward.

If PSUs that were from other brands but OEM Seasonic, I'd feel a lot more confident buying them if they were to cobrand with something like Asus ROG x Seasonic as opposed to having to search online to see if you could even easily find who the OEM for it is. It might not work for other OEMs that aren't as well known, but Seasonic itself is a known brand in the west and has a generally positive image.

I kind of get the magnets; because which side of the PSU is visible (if any) depends highly on the case, so giving the customer magnets and sleeved cables allows them to put them wherever they'd like. I'm sure that's the design rational, but then the problem becomes why not just sell that stuff separately?

While I love that at least someone's trying to integrate Gundam into PC components, I'm surprised no one making coolers, especially liquid coolers, have tried to do a licensed liquid cooler with Tanjiro from Demon slayer as the motif. It's like just sitting there, waiting for someone to tap the market.

I actually tested this power supply myself. At first, it seemed good but really nothing special. But then I put the Gundam magnets on it and I started an getting almost 70% increase in FPS in most AAA games and a 25 degree drop in temps for both my CPU and GPU. I would highly recommend it.

Had bad luck when I bought a 750W Rog Strix PSU a couple of years ago. It had a ticking fan and gave my 2070s the worst coil whine I've heard from a GPU. Replaced it with a Corsair RM750x v2 and it's still silent and no coil whine to mention from any of the GPU's I've used with it.

At my old job I built a PC with the full set of Gundam components for promotion. It was quite the looker but the case was not the most pleasant thing to work with and the best part of the entire set, the Z490 motherboard's backplate, was entirely covered, in the Gundam case.

Has the GN team evaluated the Minovsky Particles output of this PSU and tested its effectiveness in scrambling your sensor equipment? This is one of the most important performance metric that these reactors... i mean power supplies are rated for! XD

I m not even looking to buy a PSU, but here I m watching a half an hour video on one because you packed so much education and entertainment in it. Excellent content as always. _b
