A 150mph Hurricane Killed This Gaming PC: Cleaning, Restoration, & Repair

This PC went through Hurricane Ida in Louisiana and the viewer who built it asked us for help. We decided to step in and do some restoration on his gaming PC. This PC was in better shape than we expected; fortunately, the radiator ate the vast majority of the debris and rain dropped in from the torn-off roof, but that didn't fully prevent components from dying. We performed a full function test for this viewer and then surprised him by replacing broken parts and fixing it all. He thought we'd just do a video cleaning it, but we had other plans. The function testing was very important because there was exposure to water, and the best way to deal with a PC that has had water exposure (a spill or... a hurricane, apparently) is to thoroughly dry it, then run complete function tests to ensure no latent failures from water-logged components. Features deep cleaning of a computer, testing, and repair & restoration of this PC.

This is honestly such a sweet and generally amazing video. I don't know the person going through this but I know if it were me, testing components to the extent done here would be way out of my skill set and, even if it was reasonable to afford to replace components, I'd be constantly worried about whether something was going to die and take others with it. Seeing this video makes me genuinely happy for him simply because the peace of mind brought about from this, and the escape from reality a PC can provide, is such an astronomical benefit when having to deal with getting life back on track.

That was a nice thing to do for someone that has lost so much . I know that PC's mean so much to us Gamers that when even something small goes wrong its a major issue so I feel for him with his rig and his home . I hope it as given him a little happiness.
I think it is so wrong for insurance company's to keep taking our money but never want to pay out and when it looks like they may have to again you no longer can get insurance.
the Governments body should get involved to sort this sort of thing out too.
Good job G N

I have to take minor umbrage with something you said early on. The water itself WILL damage your hardware if you dont remove the dissolved salts it deposits as it dries - they will cause corrosion. Under BGA chips is particularly prone to this as the water tends to get stuck there. IPA is really good at getting under chips and removing these deposits and any water left (because of its low surface tension) which is why techs commonly use it. Distilled water is an alternative.
TY for being good people

That looks like the EK water-cooling starter kit, fantastic little set. Mine's still going strong after about two years though I ended up putting a bigger res cylinder on. Never figured out where the block LED was meant to go, though...
Great work as always, GN, hope Bilal finds that some of the padding in his package is a Disappointment PC shirt. The man needs new clothes, after all..

That was a nice gesture but i cant help but wonder. Why do Americans keep building crazy expensive paper homes in hurricane areas? Spends thousands of dollars on an rtx 3080 and corsair water cooling. Cant make a house in a non deadly area out of bricks like every other country in the world.

Great video, great crew you have and you did a good thing here. I'm vicariously enjoying how much space you have to do something like this now without tripping over each other. It must make such a difference to what you feel you can do.

11:08 Is that how baby metals are made? Two metals get wet together? Jokes aside, great project, helps someone in need, and is super interesting! Also, wondering if this was inspired by der8auer's flood PC videos?

That PSU is a hero! It just goes to show why buying cheap is a mistake. An expensive PSU, that's 12 years old and has won a fight against a hurricane, can ask for a better advert than that! Great job guys!

As awesome as this gesture to repair the PC components, I never thought that of all things that the motherboard was the one that is broken from that hurricane.
Props to you guys for reviving the PC.

This was a cool video, and gave me some ideas on how to clean up some of my components in the future. All GN videos are interesting, but I'd like to see more of these in the future. Great job.
