AMD Defeat: Intel i5-12400 CPU Review & Benchmarks vs. Ryzen

The Intel Core i5-12400 & 12400F CPUs get reviewed in today's benchmarks and comparison vs. the i3-12100, i5-12600K, AMD Ryzen 5 5600X, and more. We're looking for the best CPUs in 2022. Testing the Intel i5-12400 CPU, we found the CPU to be overall compelling value when compared against AMD, but it faces strong competition from Intel's own i3-12100 for absolute budget-priced gaming CPUs. Right now, Intel is lining-up to fiercely position itself in both gaming and production tests across the entire price range, and AMD is behind overall. It still has a few advantages as an alternative to Intel Alder Lake (12th Gen) CPUs, but they're becoming more constrained. In this review, we'll talk about the 2700X, the R5 3600, R5 5600X, the R7 5800X, the R7 3700X, and more from AMD; we'll also cover several generations of Intel CPUs and talk about whether it's worth upgrading.

Good review, although I would've liked to hear more about the practical advantages of having +2 cores over the i3.
For example, does the i3 start to struggle while gaming if - heaven forbid - you also run a couple of chrome tabs and spotify and discord and maybe a couple more programs in the background/second monitor?
What if you'd like to stream once every blue moon?
I get that for gaming they're very close, but since PCs aren't consoles, PC gamers don't game the same way consoles do (eg: launching a game and only running the game and nothing else running in the background)

Do you have discord plus some chrome tabs plus some other apps active in the background when you test these CPUs?? Of course you don't, then stop talking about how most people wouldn't need more cores/threads. Literally every gamer I know, has some sort of an app in the background while they play games. I had a 4c/4t cpu for several years and even back in 2017 I had performance issues, it's simply not gonna work well for many people and not only it is worth it to spend a little more on a better cpu, it's necessary.

Something left out from the price points:
- mobos prices: amd B550 based mb is 55 cheaper than intel b660 based mb (or in other words - you can take amd z570 for price of intel b660) (considering both are ddr4)
- 5600x has unlocked multiplier, while lowest unlocked intel is 12600k. While 12400f is generally cheaper, you pay more for 5600x, the amount is almost the same as intel asks to pay for unlocked 12600k compared to basic 12600 (this is taking into account mb price difference).

You're giving this a way too positive spin. Just how you gave the price hike on AMD 5000 a not enough negative one! This product is almost 2 years late a d AND price hikes were outrageous. Get your asses out if your butts and start giving these companies more of a hard time EVEN IF their products don't catch on fire. Comments here are way too positive for my taste as well. If we let theses kinds of narratives slip past us, next thing you know, we'll have 1000 60-class GPUs. Oh, wait.

Weird thought - when you hit CPU tests where it gets GPU-bound it would be interesting to see the power draw (if that varies then whatever causes the least noisy system is what I'd go for, hence the thought)
Another weird thought - would be interesting to see how various CPUs performs on a set power budget (say, 35W max (or 28W, that is roughly where a non-oversized (P6 era) heatsink can do its thing passively with only the airflow caused by the PSU in the case)).

Just because AMD had the 5600x 299 MSRP ummm.... like over a year ago. Prices now have changed alot and AMD CPUs are well below their original MSRP. Nice try trying to trick ppl into saying AMD is much more expensive and not worth it. I'm not defending AMD but when you compare CPUs to one another that came out at least a year apart, prices aren't MSRP forever. Smh, come on now you guys are better than that. Thanks for the content always tho!!

well without good budget mainboards it's still pointless.
I want to replace my r51600 and for me it makes more sense to get the 5800x. board 80 cheaper + I already have a good cpu cooler for am4 socket (another 40 ) . I'll add 20 on top and got it...
Funny thing with amds 3d cache stuff I am no hesitant to buy it and the longer I wait the more time Intel and its partners have time to release a acceptable board :D

Well, tbh I'm not impressed that a new gen cpu, and expecially the whole new gen platform, beats the old one. It sounds pretty obvious. I'm more impressed that the AMD cpu on the old one is roughly at the same performance or sometimes still better. Imagine this year when AMD will pass on the new 5th gen platform with 7000 cpus. It's not an AMD fan's consideration, it's just objectively about stats and numbers.

The problem Steve, is that whilst these CPU's are finally at budget prices, the rest of the system is not.
That 50 difference pales into a rounded error when you have to calculate the costs of the motherboard, ram, ssd, etc, all of which have seen pretty a doubling in price since I built my i9 9900k rig.
Apparently these days, 200 is for a CHEAP motherboard. You have to be shitting me...

If you count to buy into am4, you just shouldn't buy new. Second hand market is flooded with very cheap high quality b550 boards in very good state; with very cheap ddr4 ram; and OK priced CPUs. I know that Steve doesn't like to speak about second-hand market, but right now it's probably the worst possible time to buy an end-of-life amd platform new. Back to you, Steve :)
