You know it s something special when we do an unboxing. This acoustic chamber will be used for our noise testing (including Help fund these purchases! GN 3D Coaster Packs are now on back-order! We're still working on our large acoustic chamber, but this one is a good start! This chamber will allow us to test case fans, CPU coolers, and PSU fans (which we can do without a power load inside the chamber) for noise levels. The biggest additions to our existing methodology are these two points: (1) a lower noise floor, so much easier to collect data below a certain threshold (e.g. identifying which fan is the best at a low RPM), and more importantly, (2), frequency spectrum analysis. This means we will finally be able to test the type of noise being produced by a product, not just the noise level! Cases will not be tested in this chamber, nor will pre-builts. Those will follow our standard methods until we get the larger one. Newegg sold us a damaged motherboard and tried to blame us for the damage, check that saga out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL-eB_Bv5Ik If you missed it, we have a full hardware review of the Steam Deck on the channel already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeQH__XVa64 (WATCH THIS VIDEO for full details on thermal design, airflow design, power, gaming benchmarks, and more on the Valve Steam Deck)

You could test graphics cards in the chamber when using a half disassembled Thunderbolt eGPU setup _or_ with straight up daisy chained PCIe extender cables. It pains me to use Linus as an example but on LTT he did once show that you can easily cover a couple of feet of distance with those while not compromising performance or stability in a meaningful way.
Or you could even run a complete computer inside the chamber if you F U L L Y water cool it (VRM, Chipset, RAM, ...) and run the pump and radiators and the PSU on the outside of the chamber.

I highly recommend when you do noise charts to include frequency spectrum graphs. We perceive frequencies differently across the spectrum (Fletcher Munson curve) and fan motor noise is incredibly easy to hear at different RPMs. Also, it goes without saying but shoving a mic directly in front of a fan will increase low end response via the proximity effect and should be avoided.

I work for Mack trucks, they have a soundproof room at the old headquarters, that room is soooo sketchy when you walk in there, the noise floor is like 0, it almost makes you dizzy and/or wanna throw up, to a lot of people...not everyone but it's pretty cool. They test engines and cabs in there, to see how loud different things are. It's pretty cool. In Allentown,PA

Man if that tinnitus statement isnt the most true thing. I can barely stand being in a quiet apartment, let alone imagine what a fully isolating chamber would be like. This is seriously cool though, sounds like it would be super handy finding out what coolers are a cut above the rest for noise. Cant wait to see the results!

Brilliant intro (as in pre-sponsor): First the li... fib about unboxing, I'm sure it was the only unboxing, not only TYPE of unboxing), but totally forgive, these are worthy exceptions. However the best bit was seeing Stone's face when Steve totally undermined his attempt at masculinity by calling out his stick .

ya , I would have just lifted it up on the pallet jack cut the sides off , cut the metal strapping and slide it out after putting it back down on the casters.. no other pieces under the wheels would be needed , but your way was way more entertaining :)

All I can think of when he was talking about turning the A/C off and people being quiet when testing was Kevin (from The Office) taking a bite of his candy bar.
3 minutes into testing you just hear OHHH YEAH from the next room over.

how accurate are you guys being when you measure from a sound source, do you measure from the edge of the device or to the exact noise producing component such as the motor hub of a fan or a noisy inductor coil on a psu or gpu

Mike:
I have Tinnitus too.
I purposely built my PC with fairly loud fans and it sits a couple feet away from me at my desk.
Runs really cool and mitigates my ringing ears.

Maybe I missed something in the explanation, but if the casters are already on the ground, why not just run the circular saw and cut all the pallet boards then wheel it free?
