2022's Best Budget CPU is Old - 78 Intel i3-10100F Revisit & Benchmarks

In our quest to find the best sub- 100 CPU, we recently re-encountered the Intel i3-10100 and 10100F gaming CPUs. Back in 2020, these were in fierce competition vs. AMD, but now, their biggest competitors are Intel's own i3-12100 and 12100F. The recent price reductions have the 10100 series down closer to 78- 80 for the non-IGP variant (the 10100F), whereas the 12100F is currently 107. That might make the 10100F a good option for people building truly limited budget gaming PCs - but let's benchmark them and find out.

So in these graphs the 10100 beats out the R5 4500 in a few or gets close to it in many, But that's the thing about benchmarks while they provide an amazing view of the hardwares performance on a singular task where nothing else is happening, The real world result will be a bit different, Who games with just the game open? For example I typically have no less than 20 Chrome tabs, Discord, Spotify, Keyboard software, RGB lighting software, Mouse software... Headset software... and that's where the R5 4500 will start beating the 10100/10100F handily because these games are pushing the 10100 to it's limits without background running where as the 4500? Still has some steam left in the tank.
That's not to say it's a bad buy if that's all you've got money wise, Then that's all you've got and the 10100 will certainly get the job done, But a smoother experience is to be had from either vendor with just 2 extra cores honestly.

Something important to keep in mind if building a budget rig with the 10100 and pairing it with a GPU -- 10100 does not have PCIE 4.0. If building a budget system this leaves pairing it with the RX 6400 (pcie x4 4.0) RX 6500 (pcie x4 4.0) and older 5500 xt 8gb (pcie 4.0 x8) off the table -- because the first two are bottlenecked in pcie 3.0 4x mode, and the latter is bottlenecked by the pcie 3.0 8x mode. Good job amd :facepalms: If aiming for 1080p look to pairing these cards with something like a 1660 super or RX 6600 -- both can be found around 300 on amazon, or go with something older if you really want (1060 6gb, RX 590 8gb) -- an additional note here anything pascal and lower on the nvidia side is not recommended for linux usage, as it has trouble dx12 titles when used with vkd3d in proton/steam play. Your best bet on linux as a starting point on nvidia is the 1650 super or 1660 super.

Had a 2700X up until recently. Best CPU I ever owned, great performance, didn't even need an aftermarket cooler to keep it cool and quiet, I'm just sorry I never tried OC-ing it. I've upraded to a 5900X since and while the performance is good I've had nothing but problems with it otherwise. I strongly considered trading it for a 12th gen Intel at one point even if it was a weaker model.
It was 50% off when I got it and for that price it was a massive bargain. If anyone can find a similar deal I can't recommend it enough.

Hey GN I know it's not really what you guys cover but take a look at the problems with the windows 21H2 update sometime if you need content.
Been multiple years and millions of users cannot update, locking them out of the windows store.
I needed to fully flash a new OS iso recently so a kid could use Minecraft bedrock.
No joke I tried everything.
In the end a ISO file actually reverted itself without internet. How in God's name 1909 was hidden inside other builds is beyond me but it turns out it is.

I will have to endure the Hate, With the 10100f If in a couple of years you need more, its possible the 11700k will be cheap, which face facts is a Pretty strong gaming option considering it s a waste sand
Or AMD a Good Used MSI b450 carbon in Auction Not buy it now Pricing, and almost every CPU will Run most Games, and later upgradable all the way to a 5800x or 3d or 5900x
I think AMD is the better value option, but Intel is better plug and play

AMD's already released a low end graphics card that make PCIe Gen 3 the bottleneck. I'm not sure why people do not believe PCIe gen 3 is at the end of it's life with newer graphics cards set to become twice as powerful as the previous ones & rapid storage technologies becoming more integrated into gaming.
That 20 is the difference today is like going from a 6700K to a 8700K & that before considering the I/O limitations.

I built a PC in January with a 10100F and it's been great. I see it as a good enough threshold. So far it's held 60+fps in every game we've tried, and 60fps is good enough for a great gaming experience. Going from 60fps to anything higher is a very small improvement to the experience, so there's really not much reason to pay any amount extra for it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I were to build that PC again.

I love all these super extreme budget videos. They all make the same silly mistake of putting top tier 1000 GPUs in the test bed and don't think that's the least bit silly.
if you can't even afford a 20 upgrade in your 80 CPU. You're not buying a 3080 to throw in the system. You're probably scraping the piggy bank to get a 1650 or 6500, or getting a used last gen mid tier like 2060 or 5600xt.

brilliant reply to some of the other influencers out there telling you to spend money on AM4 products (trying to flog a dead horse imo) instead of waiting for am5, one particular claiming its budget! just feels like AMD have shoved some money in pockets!!... thanks for keeping real Steve, where budget matters you have nailed it

I know its a whole lot of testing to do to have comparison data like the current setup with the 3080, but it would be really nice to have a budget setup for testing the lower end cpus. I'd like to see what the difference would be with a 3060/3050 or similar lower end gpu, like what would typically be paired with lower end cpus.
