15 Years A King: Cooler Master Hyper 212 in 2022 Benchmarked (Black Edition)

We're revisiting and benchmarking the Cooler Master Hyper 212, specifically using the Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition (a more recent, but still many-years-old successor) to see how the 212 does against more modern coolers. Newer alternatives include the Deepcool AK400, Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120, and Vetroo V5. We'll also cover performance results versus the stock AMD CPU coolers, like the AMD Wraith and AMD Stealth coolers.

I had a 212 on my 4000 series i5, replaced the fan (new fan cost as much as I originally paid for the cooler lol) and it kept trucking till I upgraded my computer last year.
Were there better coolers available? Sure.
Was the mounting hardware awkward? Oh yeah (I had the earlier X clasp)
Was it cheap? Absolutely.
Do I regret buying the 212? Not even a little.
Remember those 4000 series processors ran pretty hot and it kept my CPU temps in check. I wasn't running any crazy overclocks or anything but hey, for a super cheap cooler (I think I got it on sale for 15) it was a hell of a buy. 11/10 would buy again.

I have a Hyper 212 LED and a MasterAir Pro 4 - A model that WAS supposed to replace 212 but unsuccessful lol
They were dirt cheap (around 15 each), and were fun to play with. I swapped the 212 stock fan for stronger airflow, and later upgraded to push-and-pull configuration (i.e. Hyper 212 Turbo).
My 212 has to go to my reserve when I upgraded to 5800X with Noctua U12A. But it will be back when I re-use my old i5-6500.
9:13 I don't know if many people know this, but when tightening a screw, always start by turning the driver in opposite direction first in order to let the screw fit the threads.

I ran a H212 Evo with dual arctic freezer fans (bought back than al together for about 25 euros) for 8 years, than when upgrading to AM4 the black edition was still basically the most affordable cooler at the time (maybe due to lockdown) and so i just went for the same configuration, and sold the old one foe almost the same price as well. I think this cooler still does a decent job when used with dual fans, although it may not always be the bang-for-buck choice anymore, it does look quite good while performing decently.

I bought my Hyper 212 LED Turbo black cover back in february 2018 for 44,90 which is roughly US 56,25. I am still using it on my Ryzen 7 5800x, on normal loads it is more than sufficient, when I run cinebench for a few minutes I do see throtteling due to the amount of heat the CPU is putting out. So I am slowly thinking about replacing it, not sure which route to take (other air cooler like the Be Quiet Darkrock Pro 4 or a 240 mm AiO). I replaced the fans about a year ago for 2 Be Quiet silent wings 3 120 mm fans.

Thanks. Picked up a 5700x on sale to update my old 2700x. The 212 black edition was available on Amazon... Went with the AK400 as it was 2/3 of the price. Now I can keep my low tdp 5700x attached to my water loop and my old 2700x will get the ak400 in a repurposed home lab server.
Ps... Seems counter intuitive to put the 5700x on a water cooled loop... But that's the rig that I look at and have right beside me every day. The 2700x box will be relegated to an isolated area.

I run 212 black edition for my 5900X... xD Originally I got it for a 3600X, but yeah, it works great! Even when the CPU ran at 180W it did just fine, I was worried at first, but works!
About the screws, I really struggled to get my cooler mounted, I'm not very strong. Meaning I have to try very hard and risk damaging things, pretty sure mine is not installed all that well, but it works and keeps it cool, not had any issues in 9 months of use so is probably fine xD

I don't know if it's possible, but Cooler Master V8 was pretty good and had many mounting options. Heck I had 2 of them go over aver an AM3 build and X79 build. Unfortunately, Intel changed the mounting system on X99 which forced me to go AIO as an early adopter and pay the price on poopy pumps. I still have my Cooler Master V8 kicking on my X79 system in a HAF 922 case. It would be neat to see how it stacks up today if it's possible.

I would like to see also 200W testing, I know that not many cpus are taking this much power, but it would be interesting to see what is the maximum each cooler can deliver before overheating on 100 C. I'm currently using Arctic Freezer 34 Duo for i9 9900, it takes about 199W when running Cinebench, the cpu reaches about 95C but doesn't overheat except for one core, but this might be just mounting pressure.

I have a 212 since my 1090t and you have the option to put push pull with the extra bracket in the box, i would like to see the 2xFan configuration because you have other ones with 2 Fans and the 212 with two fans improve a lot, the cooler still works and with the AM4 adaptor it was running in a r5 1600 and then in a r5 2600, BTW the stock fan still works and it is working in a second computer.

Back in 2012 I bought it for around 24 euros. Still using it today with my i5 6600k :D. Only changed the fan because original one was really loud at some point. But definitely I would change it for the next upgrade (if there is no compatibility).
Funny thing, Mike speaks about worrying of a cross threading but he doesn't turn anti-clock wise first to hear the click and then tight the screw.

I had this thing on my 4770k! To start off, I had a antec case from the core2duo days but this cooler kept my PC running solid even with an OC! ...Granted, I had to take the side of the case off because the airflow was uh...dire, but when I did that, it ran super cool & lasted me until... Well, it's still running since my friend is running my old CPU with this cooler to this day.

I had this in my first pc which was a prebuilt, when I didn't know much about computers. Over the years after doing upgrades and complete new builts I got to appreciate the job they did on that prebuilt at the time (compared to call those horror comparisons). It was a really great system done with care. Cooler is still being used in a family system (original fan even).

The mere idea that we are still talking about the viability of a cooler from the C2D days is a testament of how good this thing was. No other cooler from back then is still in the conversation, not even stuff the stuff Thermalright sold that came with just the tower and no fans that was considered the best at the time.

used to be 21 euros.... swapped mine over my 2700x from my fx6350...still works just fine. two of them run since 2012 in my familly.
currently using the plastic clips and push pull 120's, even if it's not necessary. IMO they are far better that way, because they at least try to funnel some of the air through the cooler.
