House Fire Destroyed Subscriber's Gaming PC, We're Fixing It

We deep clean and repair a gaming PC that went through a house fire. The question is whether or not it survived, and we're going to do our best to recover it and bring it back to a pristine state. This gaming PC is from a viewer, and regardless of whether or not we can recover it for him, we're going to make sure he at least has a gaming PC to take his mind off the difficult times. This is beyond the usual deep clean of dust in coolers and GPUs -- we're cleaning soot, ash, rust, and more from this computer.

I let the line from CLASSIC STAR TREK ITS DEAD JIM HOUSE FIRE is THE WORST CASE . What this is LVING THOUGH BLOODY HELL ON EARTH I seen FIRE go out of control on video. I seen a video of a AIR BUS crash on HOUSES at QUEENS NEW YORK the death toll is insane the cause of the crash is PILOT ERROR and WORST PILOT TRAINING the CAPAIN STOMPING the the FOOT PADDLES that abuse the RUDDER and the VERTIAL STABLIZER SNAP OFF lost control as the AIRBUS simply dropping out of the sky the engines gets torn off and slam in to houses causing the fuel and gas lines in the houses to EXPLODE its like 9/11 ALL OVER AGAN. you see I watch DISASTER VIDEOS so I can learn what went wrong and learn how they make changes to disasters to not happen again. or at least teach people how prevent DISASTER

Destroys thermal pads.
Friends, buy thermal pad kits. We have all told ourselves to save the thermal pads, determined to do so. But as the 2nd one rips, the 3rd one is fused to the cooler (and rips), and the 4th one spaghetti-noodles to the point it will never cover a mosfet or memory module again, we realize, once again, we f cked up.
I was 19 years old when I saved enough to buy an ATI Radeon HD 5970. First time I cleaned it, removed all thermal pads, never replaced them. 6 months later, I had a dead card past warranty. Don't make a long-term mistake that 5 minutes of patience and a 20 dollar thermal pad kit can alleviate. (this maybe pointed more towards the younger audience. 19 year old me just thought they were annoying )

When I was 16 we had a house fire that really did a number with the smoke damage. Practically all the damage was smoke damage and water damage. The fire never really got going due to oxygen starvation (luckily I guess.) Seeing that computer brought back memories of the stuff that was ruined in that fire. I saved my Siamese cat who was upstairs hiding under my parent's bed. I knew where she hid and just went into the house to get her while the firemen were working in the downstairs where the fire was. I came out with her, she was really near death, and one of the firemen gave her oxygen while he chastised me about going in there. I told him they would have had to restrain me physically to stop me.

had a house fire caused by a reptile heat mat in September of 2021, still rebuilding (wild shit, would not recommend Simcon as a contractor as a side note). My PC was in HORRIBLE condition afterwards, but the ram, gpu, cpu and an ssd survived. It's insane what some parts can survive, the monitor, mouse, and keyboard were melted and chassis had to be pried open because the side latch was melted shut. Dell server towers can take a beating and still protect their innards. Glad Luke and his family are ok, and glad to see he's got a new PC! Imagine an apocalyptic paint job on that case...

I hope Luke will appreciate what someone did for him, and maybe, some day he can pay it forward. Trust me, you get what you give. When I was able and relitively comfortable I gave nothing. I cared for nothing. Side effect of being a cop, I hated people. Then I became disabled. Lost all friends and now have nothing. No one has ever done anything for me, except one time a nice lady bought me a cup of coffee. So Luke, Praise God for what you have been given and never take it for granted. I am terribly sorry for you and your family to have lost so much.

It's a Christmas Miracle / Holiday Miracle build (not sure on the time it happened but it sounds like it was sadly around the Holidays). It's wonderful to see some of the best in the Tech News Industry doing something like this for the people who enjoy the Content. Also, it shows how robust the PC Industry is when it comes to components, not all but some, and why the time is needed to rigorously test these components at the manufacturer. Cheers! Stay Healthy and Stay Sane!

Lol, there's me thinking at the start that the case may be the only thing that was salvageable, thinking that it may give a cool look/pateina to the build and that most of the internals would need to be replaced, great to see GN helping out people like this and great to see how our PCs could hold up in those situations, sending love and best wishes to the chap who's PC this was, I hope he and his family are doing well

Steve in all seriousness, you guys over there are the greatest. I grabbed food and drink and watched this like I would a Hollywood movie. What your team did for this young man was nothing short of incredible and I would also like to thank NZXT for sending over the parts. I found myself rooting for the motherboard hoping that it was going to boot. This is what a PC Community looks like at a time of a crisis!!!

Pretty cool video, I was thinking just the cpu would make it. I would have been scared to turn on anything with a fan in it haha. I prefer soot out of my lungs. I think replacing the case was a good idea, having it around might trigger repressed trauma for something. Sometimes that doesn t pop up for a while after the event, when you have time to settle and decompress.

there was a fire in my room must be 25 to 30 years back now and luckly i managed to get it under control with some quick thinking and the sacrifice of some of our bath towels but you can still see the smoke damage here and there all these years late.
i really feel sorry for this person and their family's and hope they manage to recover and get back on their feet.

Personally, I would have left the case as is with all the soot and everything and just painted it with clear coat to seal it. Would have looked SICK. Same with the GPU, I would have not repainted it, just clear coated it. Just has so much more of a story and character to it that way. You make it all look new it s like meh, the story is just words not tangible.
reply

Both Mike and Patrick were great in front of the camera!
Steve, in my opinion, you can easily rely on more people from GN to host videos.
Also, thank you for this great video, it was amazing to see how much hardware survived the fire. And I'm happy to read in your pinned comment that his living situation has greatly improved.

reply

Respect for doing this. I do have a philosophical difference though. I think you should have retained the case and done something like a sympathetic restoration . The computer was in a fire and resurrected from the dead. Slightly charred case would have been the centerpiece, the impetus for sharing the computer's unique story with others.

I've seen a few people do those 'gpu mods' the original PC had. Always wondered if they offer any real benefit. Would be interested to see a video that tests those kinds of mods out if you guys were to ever make one.
DOes it offer any real performance benefit? More overclocking headroom? Or just a fun gimmick?

4:05 All of the extra contents in the box are possibly a result of the disaster recovery company who tend to deal with the contents (and property) assessment for the insurance company. They catalogue, pack, clean, dispose of contents as required. All of the box contents have probably been written off by insurance.
