Our new approach to PC build guides features them as what we're calling templates. Rather than a firm list of what you should buy, because the nature of PC building is so variable and modular and there's always something better, we're offering a list of benchmarks with a base platform. This compiles data from multiple reviews, collects new data, and shows upgrade pathways on the base build. You could assemble this PC, depending on things like GPU & cooler purchases, for anywhere from 600 to 900. We're using the cheapest B550 motherboard that we've yet received (there are others, of course) to test it out. Because we're taking this PC build template approach, the price could drop lower from ditching the aftermarket cooler, downgrading the GPU (big price drop from that), changing the RAM, etc. Could also easily scale up with a 2070 Super or 5700 XT.

In my personal opinion using something like the Shadow Rock 3 with a Ryzen 3300X build is way to expensive, unless you just happen to have one laying around at least. At the moment it's about 55, though it's apparently out of production so I'm not sure about that price.
If we do go with that price then the combined price for the 3300X and the SR3 would be about 190. That's about 15 from a 3600X. If you go with a 3600 instead you would have 23 over which might or might not be enough to upgrade the cooler.
Seeing how expensive the SR3 is it would be very interesting to see how the 3300X performs with something quite a bit cheaper. How much do you have to pay match the stock cooler and what does it take to get a noticeable improvement?
Another problem is that at the moment the 3300X seems to be almost impossible to get hold of. The only seller I found that even listed a price for it was Newegg, and they don't have it in stock.

Personally I think this type of content just adds another layer to your already bountiful harvest of no-nonsense straight up facts when it comes to PC building and it's myriad of components. I can only see positives coming from this, bringing in the type of viewer who's unsure about PC building only to have them leave well informed and feeling better more secure in their purchases and more importantly themselves. You don't kowtow to anyone and it shows that integrity matters. People really take notice of these type of things...

I have the Asus Tuf B450M-Plus Gaming and I'm not a fan it's a really cheap motherboard and it's feature set reflects that, I'm upgrading to a MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge Wifi for my Ryzen 5 3600 one of the only B550/X570 boards that were in stock/backordered. With the asus tuf board my only option for an overclock is a 3.95GHz all core I can push it to 4.1GHz but I have to push too much voltage and it gets pretty hot I imagine this wouldn't be such an issue with a better VRM set and pulling the CMOs battery is such a pain!

Gamer that struggles to know what to upgrade next. More of a competitive player so I care for more fps. :D
I haven't overclocked anything cause I'm not familiar with that kind of stuff and not using liquid cooling either.
I'm a budget gamer so please don't go crazy on me. I can do around 600e ( 670) upgrade for now.
Here is what i'm rolling with now:
CPU: I5 8600k
GPU: MSI GTX Armor 1080 8gb
RAM: 16gb 2666mhz
MOBO: MSI Z370 SLI PLUS
2x Samsung ssd 860 evo
PSU: 700W
OS: Win 10

Steve! Awesome content, just started watching you guys recently, and really enjoy all your reviews and just downright straight factual information (although, your math i s only theory...jk)! Keep up the awesome work.
Planning to put an order in for one of the GN mouse mats, was wondering if yall would ever make one in red stitching? I love the design, and the blue will go awesome with my current build, but working on a red/black build at the moment and would love get one of these in red.

Extremely thorough build guide. Also, just happens to be nearly identical to my intended build. B550 is about as available as the 3300x, which is essentially non-existent or highly overpriced at this point. Would have liked to see this guide shown with real alternative CPUs/MBs that I could reasonably buy. This is a great guide. It's just not relevant for the next few months.

I don't really see the point of the 3300x? In core heavy games, aka the future a 1600af/2600 has better lows and on a 2060 which is the max you should go for these kinds of CPUs imo the average FPS is the same due to gpu bottleneck. I think it's unwise to choose any of the ryzen 3s. Not only that there's still the gains of ram tuning on the 2600 as well

Well, the 3300X has been out of stock everywhere for a good bit, but at least Amazon restocked on 1600AFs.
Edit: same with the P300A. Was helping a friend part out a PC, and every component other than the SSD and RAM had some sort of shortage issue that ended up costing. Ended up getting a Antec P82 Flow for 70 that comes with 4x140mm fans.

if you are doing light multitasking like gaming, discord / teamspeak and watch a stream (backround-noise i guess) on another monitor would you still recommend the 3300x? a friend of mine wants to upgrade from an i5 4460. While playing CoD Warzone discord is more or less not responding , which is pretty annoying.

You can cheap on using inbox CPU cooler (50 bucks) and buy B450 instead of B550 (You can get cheap decent ASRock B450 Gaming K4 or Pro4 for 90 bucks to save another 50 bucks) and buy Sapphire Pulse RX 5700XT instead of RTX2060. This way you're getting 20 % faster semi 4K capable gaming PC for the same price.
