For me issue with Windows update is not the updates themselves, but the automatic nature of the update process itself.
i much rather get notified that -hey we got new updates for you, would you want to download and install them.-
yes i know that this only delays them few days or maybe week or two, but i don't really want to delay them that long anyway.
for me even with active time keeping my pc from rebooting itself automatically rather well nowadays.
i rather just choose when i update and do the restart right after that, so as it is now group policy method of enabling -notify me about new windows updates, but let me choose when to download and install them- selection has made windows update a non issue for me.
and i seriously hope that windows 11 lets me continue to use that method too.

I know I'm a bit late in adding a comment here, but why do you feel the need to disable Defender other than for freeing up resources? I find it to be a capable antivirus program although I do still install Malwarebytes (free) on customer computers to complement it. Defender does what it's supposed to do without beating you over the head every day to buy a full featured antivirus suite like most of the so-called free options out there. When I'm doing a Windows installation, it's nice to not have to think about what antivirus client to install for the user.

I must admit I haven't had a bad virus in a long time , but I strongly believe security is what's locking my system from time to time. I miss win XP where I had some control . I just installed w10 on a new ssd and learned a lot about the big change. I learned edge hides your favorites file, what's with this. Also I thought all your saved password were saved on your computer , but when I went to a web sight on my new computer I was automatically logged in. Meaning MS has them saved. Control and privacy is a thing of the past.

In Group Policy there is a setting called Turn Off Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus > Turn off ..... I have the latest update of Windows 10. So unless you did something to your OS, like third party software, the setting is there !
Why is so hard to look for something, searching and then talking about it ???? Shame !

Chris, can I ask would your Security Updates Only tweak still work in 10 Pro 1909? As it's reached its EOL, previous GP (Target Release Version) changes are overridden and it forces an update to 20H1. Is your tweak any different, or is it no longer possible to stick on a specific Win 10 version, once its EOL has been reached?

or another way : install immunet (clamav)(the antivirus from cisco, add all disks to its don't scan list (and you and just type them like c:\ [add] , so adding stuff to the list is quick and disable everything in the scanner it does , keeps defender happy thinking there is an antivirus active and it doesn't affect anything

I did do this but there's still an -Antimalware service executable- running or a service called -WinDefend- or -Microsoft Defender Antivirus Service- and it is actually using a lot of resources still so thats odd. I can't even disable it btw all the options for stopping or the startup options are greyed out.

I would like to see for a intermediate to advanced user: Guidelines to follow to potentially stay safer on a stripped down windows 10. Been using windows for 26 years roughly. Never had a repair or network job but I do a lot of UI tweaking, customization and game development.

Question: Why would you want to disable Windows Defender? I disable Windows Search all the time because it is useless. It also slows down my entire OS. I prefer Windows 10 to 7 just because of the Defender. How significant of a performance hit could you have seen from it?
