LARBS is way better if you can get it to work on your laptop..my knowledge of systems is dismal, n my MSI laptop just doesnt play nice with the default arch boot thingy, but manjaor can somehow, negotiate its space next to windows 10..so am doing some kde palsma+ Quarter tiling to get best of both worlds, but then again, once there is some build or make task in the terminal the whole thing just freezes but thats just maybe once a week, mostly i am so pleasantly delighted with how efficient KDE plasma + Quarter tiling is nowadays, my latest windows 10 update + wsl2 just plain pissed me off..it takes away 2.4 gb ram right off the boot!!!

So I decided to install this thin on actual hardware and the results are even worse than what you saw in the VM. The keyboard shortcuts only work half of the time, that annoying graphical menu will pop out of nowhere and refuse to go away (kind of like in the video), the rofi style prompts you get have random unrelated options that are seemingly random... assortments of letters, I guess etc. This is the most beta software I think I have ever seen lol. I'd love to see a more refined version though, it is at least promising in its concept.

-we are not looking for animations, .... then you probably wouldnt have chosen a tiling wm anyway-
Wow, that is a statement. Hes right about the performance part, but lets face it, not having animations in 2021 is a bit stoneage. Love how instantWM actually seems to try to bring tiling managers into modern time desktop. I mean, android is basically using a tiling WM, albeit very limited compared to what one expects from a desktop experience

I am wanting to install Linux on my laptop because I don't trust Microsoft. My mom won't let me escape Microsoft because my parents bought the laptop. I explain to her why Microsoft is not trustworthy, and why I don't want my data being stolen. I come up with the compromise that sometime I should get an external hard drive to install Linux on. After that, she says I am manipulating her and tells me to go to my room. Am I manipulating her, or not?

DT, Could you please give InstantOS a second chance on real hardware, if you can?
I think because virtualbox has poor 3d capabilities the distro hasn't got a fair chance or review.
That is not your fault, it is just because how virtualbox works or doesn't work in this case.
Same goes for Cinnamon desktop, cinnamon doesn't work with 3d acceleration inside virtualbox, it switches to software rendering inside vbox.

Nice review. This distro could definitely use some polish, but I like the Idea of a DWM based distro. But they/someone should focus more on the -suckless- theme. Also... I am a -normie- user who uses DWM and Tmux, Vim, Ranger. Perhaps it is redundant... but for those 1 or 2 tasks... It is just easier to launch a Tmux- then go back to using the DWM tiles. Also Tmux is handy in the TTY when you have not ran -startx- yet

-instant- - takes 45 minutes to install
-fast- - animations take forever, windows open with the speed of a snail, keystrokes take their damn time, compositor is hungry
-it works- - conkys that don't work, terminal is not configured for clipboard
-powerful- - what does that even mean? we're on linux, of course it is powerful
Looks very beta and amateur, looks like a web developer made it :(

It's enough to make you want to pull your hair out. If you had any. I just don't understand those tyling wm's. All those key bindings to remember. I can pin all I need on the panel and with one click they open. The one wallpaper is a bing picture of the day.

I liked the video, though I have to admit it was like watching a nightmare from which i couldn't escape. I am not an authority to claim these are horrible design choices, but let me just say that IMHO, it could be better. This distro is all over the place.

Tmux allows for a server, scrolling but also for more powerful terminal management such as combining tabbed and split layouts. I have been running tiling wms for a decade and i only recently started using tmux. I would never go back to a -normal- terminal.
