Very informative video and in detail, but my issue is I use my external hard drive about 5 days a week for the last 4yrs and it is formatted correctly as of last night it wasn't appearing on my MacBook Pro? I changed the cord and it worked well 2hrs in on using it it unmounted itself? I tried to reconnect and it would not show up only on disk utility I tried to mount it manually through disk utility but it would not mount? I forced the the usb as much as I could into the hard drive and it showed up on my display? I am now backing up files as it appears on my MacBook Pro...... I ran first aid and no issues...... is there anything else I can do without reformatting the HD? or is the HD going out?

in DiskUtilty, i can see and click on the ext drive, but - mount - is greyed out. when i try First Aid, it takes a split second to complete, but does nothing. the drive worked for years, so its not the format. have you got any other solutions i can try please? if i could afford to buy data recovery software i would. unfortunately i cannot

The real thing that happend to some one may be installed a Seagate software and after that the HDD file is not showing up ...even after deleting it ..be patient u want to uninstall it through the DMG file that u used for installing .... believe me it will really work...and thank me later -

Hi thank you for this video. Unfortunately my hard drive just stopped showing up. Even on disk utility I can-t see my external drive. It was fine for years but suddenly stopped. Even if ai download the recovery software, I won-t be able to select my external drive-
What else can I do?

mine just completely disappeared from disk utility and everything, lights are on and i hear them running(happened to 2 at once). any suggestions? or maybe something just happened to them both and their fried? i do have a lot of usb hubs and they were plugged into one

My mac doesn't recognize it in Finder like it used to, yet when I unplug the cord from the USB, the notification pops up saying I didn't eject my hard drive properly...how does it know I had it plugged in if it's not recognizing it??

So what do you do if Disk Utility doesn't show your HD? Mine is plugged in and all it does is make this ticking/throbbing sound. It isn't showing up anywhere. (It's always worked before, by the way. I-ve had it for years.)

hey there thanks for the lesson, when i plug Western Digital Thunderbolt Duo 8TB on my mac it frezz and stuck after a few second of accesing the folders, i may plug the wrong power adapter for a while. please help

I've been following these steps and my external WD mybook won't even let me erase and reformat. When I look at the permissions it appears I now only have 'read only' and there's no little lock to change it.
