Transparency With The Compton Compositor DistroTube A common question I get is how did you get transparency in (program name)? This can be especially tricky when using standalone window managers that do not include a builtin compositor. You have to use a third party compositor. The one I choose to run is compton. - https://github.com/chjj/compton

Perfect topic, mate! I was playing around with compton last week to beautify my i3 with drop shadows, but it feels quite sluggish despite a 4GB video card. It also takes a significant amount of time displaying my wallpaper, leaving a grayish sort of color before it finally shows up.
As for transparency in urxvt, I simply use a tint-color setting in my config file, or whatever it is. With compton, terminal takes seconds to load.
As for drop shadows, it also shadows browser menus in Chromium and Firefox, which I don't want to have at all.
Ditched it for now, but will get back to it once I got some time.
Great content, as always, Derek :)

Hello Distro. I am wondering.. is it possible to change resizing style in compton? What if I want to use rectangle resizing or outline resizing? Is that achievable? I was using Unity DE and it had compiz wm by default and I love compiz. Now I am using kde with kwin ofcourse and also the i3 wm with compton. The only part of i3 which I don't like is that when i resize firefox for example there are some black areas and what not.. if I could change resizing style in compton then I can switch to i3 for good.
Greetings from Serbia.

I am using compton and rofi and I want to be able to set the opacity settings in ./config/rofi/config however those settings don't apply but if I put the opacity setting for Rofi inside the compton.conf then that works. Why is that?

After installing compton there is a example config under -/usr/share/doc/comton/examples- called compton.sample.conf. Copy it to your .config dir, name it comton.conf and play with the settings.

I use compton for transparency on my patched st terminal , and for some shadows around things. Only issue is, it has problems with some games in my window manager, so I usually kill it :

how do you have full mouse control? when iv'e installed i3 iv'e never had full mouse controls for the windows.. like moving around and resizing from the corners lol

fcompmgr is another, slightly older and slightly lighter, compositor you can use. I use it for a bit of eye candy on the oldest machines I revive with linux.

I set transparency levels per app within AwesomeWM. Some terminals like Tilda also allows transparency of background-only without making the text look faded

You gotta cover Compiz at some point, I'd love to see what kind of shenanigans you could do with it. Used to use it myself on the MATE desktop.

When I use OpenGL at KDE the Intel CPU is locked at turbo because I have internal GPU and Nvidia both. Nvidia Optimus. So I have to use Xrender.
