He (Robert Beens) is also CEO of a company that makes it their business to track, gather, and sell every bit of information they can gather. Nope, he is NOT gonna talk about that because he knows it is an exact opposite of what Startpage used to stand for. For now we don't know how/who/what he has changed at Startpage but somehow Google allows them to skim results off them free of charge. I don't trust them any futher than I can throw someone that claims it is their business to know as much about you as possible. There is a two-faced decision here folks, do you believe a person that knows your info is money and lots of it and secretly (they announced his takeover months after it was complete. For now, I am dropping Startpage and it hurts, but my privacy is worth more than his bottom line. There is a reason the top privacy web sites have stopped ranking Startpage in their lists. Read them for yourselves and see if this new CEO that is very very sparse on details about his other company is worthy of being trusted. for me it was a no-brainer, NOPE.

That's an interesting point you brought up about the competitiveness of privacy tools and the hostility nearly of other users. I 100% agree, it does feel like no matter what precautions you go to, it is never enough for some people and it's pretty damaging really. It's already hard enough, impossible in some regard, to escape the ecosystems big tech create but when what you're doing 'isn't good enough' to some why bother trying?

Okay, seems like a good product. I missed some details about their business, how do they make money? I listened to 36: 20 Non targeted Ads only, how effective is that for the advertiser -? Seems smt is missing.

Startpage was recently bought by System1, and those guys are in the business of 'data harvesting'. How does this holds up against the - it's all about privacy mantra-?

Great interview! Question for Startpage: the last reported independent audit of your service was in 2018. When will the next one take place?
