Do dumb TVs even exist anymore? Legit question.
See, I was well aware of all those things back when I got a 55- Samsung. around 6 to 7 years ago if I'm not mistaken. FullHD, not even 4K yet.
After a couple of months shopping around, I just gave up and bought a 3D smart TV model simply because I could not find a non-Smart TV of that size at a reasonable price. I think nowadays you can get dumber 55-, but back then you just couldn't find them, at least not here where I live.
Worse, the 3D part was also entirely unecessary. it's just that at least back then, for a 55 incher which was plenty expensive, it was just assumed that you'd want the complete shitty -advantage pack-. :P
So yeah, I just installed the thing, tossed the dedicated SmartTV remote at the back of some drawer with all the 3D glasses and bs, and just didn't connect it.
Ok, !'ll admit it. I did at least test a few things. But you know the worst part? It worked like shit. Brand new model, expensive as hell, great as a monitor. apps worked worse than if I ran them on my 10 year old laptop back at the time, no joke. A budget crappy smartphone would run 10x more smoothly than that the piece of shit SoC they shoved into the 55- TV.
Or perhaps it was all the spyware that didn't let it run better, or the poorly coded Samsung apps that came with it, probably a combination of all factors.
So yeah, entirely agreed. Smart TVs are just TVs with some cancer attached to it. And you probably won't be able to find a big screen TV without all that crap, so just pretend it doesn't have it and never turn it on. You'll be better off getting a Raspberry Pi or some dongle PC, connecting that to the TV, and having some real control over the thing, guaranteed.

just randomly thought of it. Gigabyte got you covered.
the -AORUS FO48U Gaming Monitor - is gigabytes copy of the legendary CX oled from LG, but as a monitor instead of being a smart TV.
I didnt look that closely if it has any tacked on spy features, but its a monitor through and through (it even has displayport which is nonexistant on TV's)
TL; DR of the panel: 48- 4k 120Hz ultra low latency (gaming mode) OLED that has superb image quality.
The LG variant supports HDMI 2. 1 (i believe gigabyte does that also)
But the gigabyte -monitor- version of it supports DP 1. 4 with DSC so you can get 4k-120 over a single cable without choma subsampling. (granted you have a GPU that can do Display Stream Compression.
this thing has been on the back of my mind since i heard of it. It fits exactly the -i want a big screen but TV's suck too much- itch i want to scratch. but the price is pretty steep so yeah

I agree smart tv's are a pain in the ass and barley work correctly half the time. I use have a smasung tv that was some what of a smart tv but it worked perfectly and had a magnificent picture then it got old and shit the bed so I went out to go get a new tv and went through 2 shitty philps smart tvs that kept glitching and the sound would literally pop and stop working then I decided to get a new Samsung tv and its not any better. it has weird lines like the pixels in it already died and it really shows playing movie and video games, it says on the box that's it has Bluetooth but doesn't for some reason, sometimes when watching anything animated it has a glitch affect and shows a after image of a character. can we get back to making good tv's instead of shitty 50$ tablets you would get off of wish. I thought samsung was a decent expensive brand but nope I was wrong they have decent phones and that's about it

I don't like smart anything, including battery charges, because they always over step their boundaries!
I know this is security issue, but smart battery chargers say a battery is unrecoverable when it isn't. So smart anything is not in my self interest, and being invasive in my life is even worst. Microsoft being the biggest offender, which is why I use Linux. What I don't like is when people say if you have nothing to hide, then it's no big deal. They obviously haven't looked into this, and wouldn't mind anyone coming into their home to inventory everything they have, which, for example, is what Microsoft does. If we don't like it, then we need to tell the companies we don't like these invasion, and videos like this is a way to tell them. In the end there isn't enough people who care to make this change.

Yes your right complaining smart TVs suck. but you give us little to no real solutions! It is easy to recognize the privacy and security failures with something but offering solutions is what people want to watch and that is where your expertise would be needed. Simply put, people need smart TVs as 99% of us have a Roku or something similar and watch Amazon prime, Netflix and Redbox ect. So offer a solution please! Why not just put a VPN on your router? Your tv and streaming device such as a Roku box or any online account you access to watch movies like Amazon prime is protected with the VPN on your router right?

I had never configured the network on our smart TV, so we were safe, right? Wrong. Came out of the box with wi-fi turned on, and our router had just added it as a device and assigned an IP number. The first we knew that it was on our LAN was noticing the name -Android- in the 5G router table. Dug in and finally found the wi-fi switch in Advanced Settings, turned that puppy off. Now it-s just a TV, with input supplied by our Apple TV and Xfinity cable.

Dude I agree I got one it destroyed two new sets of earphones one side is dead worked on everything else before connecting them to the pos. Cant access volume in the menu no buttons like on a regular tv only 1 is the power button no audio out jacks list goes on, never would have bought it if I knew should have done research first

I hate smart tvs, they are bloated products, yet their netflix capabilities are nice. However we had an apple tv(version 2) before a smart tv and it basically does the same stuff. Out smart tv just died out of nowhere, probably planned obsolecense but our old dumb TV and apple TV are still out main media consumption machines

I don't get it. If you had just an offline TV, how do you actually watch content? Anything you use to cast, stream, or display online video will pose the same privacy and security risks. Is there a video showing how to actually enjoy your TV once you've blocked the smart and connected features?

Interesting.
My -tv- is basically a monitor. It has smartcrap but I don't use it mostly because it is a headache to navigate, and there is too much crap on it I have zero interest in ever seeing. So, I plug in whatever I want, and that's it.
