My New GNU/Linux Phone is Coming Soon! (Pinephone) - Rob Braxman Tech I just ordered my Pinephone from Pine64. This is the Braveheart edition and it is slated to arrive in December! Let's talk about what you can do with this phone and what you cannot since it doesn't come with an OS for this early adopter series. Let's see what they did different from Purism and the Librem 5. Pinephone Prototype assembly Some new facts that are not on the video and passed on to me directly by TL-Pine64 Pine64 Baseband and Wifi uses USB bus. This is very good news since it means the firmware on those modules do not share the memory of the main board. It also explains the simplicity of the kill switches. Just cut off USB. The OS is started via SD card just like a Raspberry PI. There is already a disk image of Ubuntu Touch here In theory you could have several SD cards with different OS's INCLUDING ANDROID. So to change OS, just change the SD card. So if you really need to use Waze on Google Apps, you could. But then you can remove it after use and go back to Linux

Hi Rob, Today I cancelled my Librem 5 pre-order. Honestly if a flip phone had a good camera and a good easy to use texting, I might just get one. I don't need much. I fully expect to see the Pine Phone overtake the LIbrem 5. First of all -price-. Most Linux developers are cheap, even if they have lots of funds. It is a tradition to use the least expensive methodology and hardware. I truly believe developers will gravitate towards the Pine campaign. I only hope that I can easily install an OS.
It wasn't the price that had me cancel my order (although I don't have a lot of money, it is the constant delay in producing a good easy to use finished product. Please keep up the good work. Thank you.

I don't know how KDE is on mobile but if it is as extensible as with desktops that is a game changer. Also from the developer side it is just an amazing experience to develop things for KDE. Also they have done some great work with applications for desktop, let's see what will come for mobile, as this platform opens some good technological potential, with telephony, IoT, robotics, VR, recording, geographical services and some design using the touch interface; those things integrated with some already well mature desktop softwares can be a great thing

Building custom Linux phone is very interesting idea, however the availability and cost will varied. I am thinking about different approach. How about mode production phones in two ways: first as you mentioned loading Linux. Second is to take out all component of production phone, and manufacture costume case that will have appropriate provision for mechanical kill switches for particular phone function like camera, microphone, radio antenna and DC power.

anyway we do have the advantage that Linux have such a large ecosystem that even with lower performance if those phones get finally well stable some companies can get their ass kicked and I am also considering long term stability as an incentive as proprietary companies differently from traditional Linux distros design new OS versions that make older devices obsolete. Other then that announcement it would be great to have mobile devices based on RISC-V

Great video. I ordered a nexus 5X by mistake but someone commented on one of your other videos that plasma works on that model so that-s what I-ll install on it. I-ve become interested in the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra open development models (H3213) and Dual SIM (H4213) which SailfishOS apparently works pretty good on. I-d like to learn how to develop firmware but I probably don-t have the drive or time to become proficient. Thanks for the great video!

I'm using a Jolla phone with Sailfish OS - honestly, compared with all the alternatives it is a quite far developed OS.
I really don't get why the community needs to cook their own soup each. We should find one good OS which every tech / privacy addicted guy is using, at least as a basic.
To me it is not possible to have bluetooth struggles still in 2019.

Only 3000 models? Looks like I need to get one soon now that my cheap carrier-locked Best Buy phone is pretty much unusuable (part of the screen is black among other LCD weirdness and it thinks I'm touching it when I'm not, preventing me from even typing my PIN.

I cant wait for this to happen. I love linux. It opens endless opportunities to play with your hardware. Imagine compiling the kernel for your custom smarthphone. downloading from repos. oh man. thats the way i want to use my phone. give me a terminal!

I ordered mine too. I already have 5 32 gb sdcards arriving from amazon - meanwhile I have a nexus 5x with kde plasma mobile and a xiaomi mi a2 with no os because I'm figuring out how this A/B slot scheme works.
