Switch to Linux? The Real Privacy OS - Rob Braxman Tech Should you Switch to Linux? We will discuss how Linux is made and how its organization actually influences its privacy features. I will discuss the structure of Linux and why it can get complex because of fragmentation of the community. But in spite of that, it is worth a serious look and perhaps a serious committment. Desktop hardware doesn't have the support from the manufacturers because there's no profit in it. Development costs money and nobody is going to do it for a tiny minority of users. Same reason why auto manufacturers don't have manual transmissions on cars. The engine and the transmission are intertwined with each other and its simply not worth it to sell 1300 units out of a quarter million unit total production run. It's not as simple as using a different transmission. Before anything else it MUST pass emissions standards and manuals are harder to work around.
On the server side it's another story as virtually every one of them runs Linux or some kind of 'nix system.

Windows Every Yes/No dialog: Would you like to wipe your computer clean? Yes or No?
User clicks right button. Result=Computer not wiped
Linux Every Yes/No dialog: Would you like to wipe your computer clean? Yes or No?
User click left button. Result=Gamble.
Why Linux results a gamble? Depending on who coded one or another dialog, buttons can be swapped allover the place.
Sometimes they are not even Yes or No, they are sentences instead.
Lack of standard in user interface and dialogs (which can lead to very serious mistakes) is the #1 reason why i stay away from linux.

Thank you for doing a stand-up job of telling the world about GNU/Linux Rob. I personally use mint as my main OS and so does my dad, my best friend and some of my buddies down the radio club. If there-s one thing I-d like to point out to the new people coming to the GNU/Linux world however, it-s that the best thing they can do is grab a _sensible_ Linux buddy to guide them rather than worry about the minutiae. We don-t want them getting scared at the initial steep side of the learning curve and coming away with the wrong impression as so many seem to.
Once again, I thank you Rob.

Awesome thanks. So I should be doing two things. I should be looking at my hardware to see if it-s Linux compatible. And also at the programs I want to use to verify they are compatible as well on that version of Linux I want to use? I-ll take a look at the website of each program that I use on a regular basis to see if they have support for Linux and what version of Linux they prefer. I hope that-s available or each of these applications. I will also look into the virtual box for my iPad use and also currently on my iPhone.

This video really put it into perspective and made more sense than any other I've watched.
Could you possibly make more linux videos that dive deeper and add them to your linux tips playlist?
Specifically, it would be nice to know if linux servers at home can be run in a VM on a Windows PC and how to automate some of the processes and maintain privacy. Other youtubers always seem to leave out important details and are bad at explaining the concepts involved.

After having timing issues with most Linux versions, which caused sync problems with audio recording I switched to Mageia several years ago and have never looked back.
I only have windows on one machine, and only because I need it for programming my ham radios, and I connect it directly to my router for updates now and then, but it is normally left disconnected from the internet.

I have installed Qubes OS on laptops hp840 g3 and g5 both with excellent results, I highly recommend, it could be tricky but one you understand how it works, it is very easy to use. as a con (or not) your bluetooth devices wont work, the gui is not so beauty as in others distros, and usb sticks and others peripherals could be more complicated to manage.

Now using Windows 10 faced with upgrade offer to 11. My mindset is eventually dumping Windows and going to Linux. SImply haven't chose the timing for this. Still undecided on the Linux interface/GUI. How many vote for running WIndows and Linux on separate hard drives first while commiting to a permanent chage vs taking the dive all at once?

Am a self employed house design & build. -Is it useful -. You have to FIRST explain to the general public how & why-s it it-s useful. Plug & play because people are busy earning a living. You are not helping by starting with a history lesson. SHOW how people will benefit using it in a personal and small business. Thanks

Yeah, Rob -- more Linux, please. I feel your pain: As an editor, I have to maintain a windows setup for PP and AE, but I've taken everything else I do over to Ubuntu -- I would much rather use it than Gates' software (well, not actually his; just ask the ghost of Gary Kindall. Thanks for everything you do, Rob!
