Migrating Files to FreeNAS from Windows - Chris Titus Tech In this video, I go over Migrating Files to FreeNAS from Windows Server. I personally like how FreeNAS manages files a lot better and the added reliability of ZFS compared to the standard NTFS / RAID setup you see in Windows Servers. Whats your opinion of FreeNAS at this point.I used to use freenas back in the day when it didn't use ZFS. Whats kept me away is the talk about using expensive server hardware like ECC memory and the large amount of RAM that zfs needs. My storage server for windows only has 8GB of ram (and some other programs) and hums along quite nicely. I use stablebit for my redudancy needs which is actually an awesome program. It takes multiple NTFS drives and creates a pool. They for every directory you can choose how many times you want that duplicated across the drives. If something every happens you can pull a drive from the system and it will just be a normal ntfs formatted drive that you can extract data from not some funky propitiatory raid5ish drive that without its pool is useless. Granted i'm sure ZFS will be more efficient in terms of capacity then stablebit but is it worth the cost? This is one of the very few boxes i have with windows running but from what i've read i just haven't been that impressed with FreeNAS. Opinion?

I very rarely have any problems with file transfers even up to 2TB disks at a time, just copying and pasting from drive to server over SMB share with wired network. highly recommend using ECC memory as well with suporting hardware to detect if there is an error other than a disk error. once all on the server, with scrubs and a few snapshots and RaidZ2 you can rest pretty easy you will be notified if there is any degradation. up to 20TB on my 24TB Media server now. LOVE freenas and ZFS.
thanks for the video. did not know how to command line copy. :)

-9:40 you could have just said that /R:1 means retry one time and /w:5 means wait 5 seconds. Context matter and bringing the users along for the logical thought process is important. In this case it would have been better too.

I have the freenas installed on usb stick, and I have all the data stored on zpool (4 HDDs). Now Im planning to upgrade all the sata HDDs with SSDs. What is the procedure of transferring the data?

Great work Chris. Do you how to convert a .vdi vbox file to be used as a freenas vm? I want to move a vbox vm to my freenas box for automation synergy. Thx in adv.
