Improving WINE Performance in Games - Chris Titus Tech In this video, I go over improving WINE performance in games. When I noticed substantial frame drops, I used the following to drastically increase my performance. -Disable Overlays (Origin In-Game, Steam, etc.) -Solid State Drives (If you see stuttering, stopping) -Use Game Capture in OBS instead of Screen Capture -Disable V-Sync -What out for advanced lighting features like God-Rays -Try out different Wine Version (Be prepared for crashes or non-starts when doing this) -USE CAUTION WHEN TRYING DIFFERENT WINE VERSIONS

Couple of notes for some people: DXVK (Direct X to Vulkan) is only compatible with Graphics cards that support Vulkan, if you are using an early DX11 graphics card it probably won't support Vulkan. If you are using one of those cards and you are getting terrible performance then disable DXVK and instally the DirectX 11/12 DLLs. Also with late 90's and the early 2000s games that are not performing well in WINE the chances are it was written for the Voodoo 3 so it will have GLIDE support so try installing the GLIDE wrapper in your WINE bottle, Diablo 2 is a perfect example of this (even if you are using the new version you can download it still has GLIDE support). So keep that in mind when playing games of that era.

Hey Chris,
I recently got a new machine with a Ryzen 5 2400g, upgrading from a Macbook Air with intel integrated. Sims 4 through Origin on Lutris worked flawlessly using the default settings in the install script. On my new machine, origin absolutely flips out, like weird flips out, it goes inverted colors, changes language, flips upsidedown and eventually crashes the machine. Origin-in-game wasn't the culprit for anything on my intel machine, unless i was in game of course. But i haven't even been able to download a game because of Origin. Any ideas?

About that hard drive... i have seen stuttering happen on 5400rpm drive that does not happen in 7200rpm drive.
Also there are more tweaks than these, for example in 1 game that i run with gallium nine(native dx9) i was able to make better with AMD_DEBUG=sisched,llvm,precompile environment variable.
If you use gallium nine, i recommend using gallium nine standalone, as that can be used with any wine version. Previously it needed wine built with gallium nine, and that meant that you could not use it with all custom wine builds.

Steam overlay is pretty good about performance, in part due to it's age and the fact that it was optimized for Linux. Alot of other overlays in WINE on the other hand really are buggy and shouldn't be used.
VSync is really messed up on Proton/Wine, always use VSync build into your desktop's compositor, not in-game. VSync in games often does not work at all due to the fact that X Server and the nvidia drivers kind of doesn't support it (at least for me) and it also destroys your input, adding almost a second of latency.

-Chris Titus Tech, what main linux distro do you use? And what would you suggest? I have a old-ish computer with only 16 gb of internal memory so I am running it off a usb 3.0 drive. I am cooming from windows and after a couple days of manjaro I have decided I HATE arch. Minecraft doesn't work, Lutris doesn't work, and a bunch of other things don't work that worked in Pop!_OS. (Pop os proceded to fail to launch and give me errors the next day tho). So what would you recomend?

Perhaps it's just YouTube glitches, but it seems as if your audio is slightly lagging the video. I've tried it in 1080p, 720p and 480p - just to see if it may be the re-encode on the YT servers. Perhaps you were just a tad too hasty in your Kdenlive edit, you know that audio of yours which you add from a 2nd source.

Chris, don't cut out your daughter pranking you (unless you want to keep it private of course), the viewers love that. ;)
With regard to your game-list on Lutris, do you have Cuphead? You might enjoy that game given that you seem to like (Hollow Knights) that action/platform genre.

Any tips on spreading Front-Rear speakers across 2 different 'soundcards' ?
using gpu-hdmi sound provider for Front speakers,
and assigning Rear to the mobo sound & speaker out ???
(oh, btw.. deb family of linuxes, Mint18 (and 19), looking to try out new Ub19.4 soon)

Hi. Thanks for the cool video.
I am having FPS drops during UBOAT, now I know it's an early access game which does have performance issues out the box but I was wondering if you have tried it and had any tips for better performance. I'm running it through steam proton.
