Practical Buying Advice For PC Parts In 2023

At CES 2023 Gordon ran into OzTalksHW and asked him for some advice on the best way to buy PC parts in the upcoming year. emteehed: my opinion and advice... go with a prebuilt.. places like microcenter... they offer to build custom PC's and offer to have it done by end of day... they're not upfront nor transparent about stress testing a non prebuilt pc... so to say that a build can be done by end of day is an outright lie... something i knew when i bought my PC from a microcenter... once i got the build home and opened it up... they proved me correct on that front... improperly built PC which could've been avoided had they read the motherboard manual... that doesn't even account for the stress testing...

I'd also add r/hardwareswap as a great place to buy/sell PC parts as it's largely fellow enthusiasts there, or r/mechmarket for keyboards/keyboard parts (despite what Gordon says you can definitely buy good stuff, just make sure the seller provided adequate photos and learn to properly clean stuff, especially for vintage products ).
Both subreddits are active (particularly for the U.S. and Canada, though international sales/trades also occur there) and relatively safe markets if you follow the rules and also apply the excellent tips mentioned by Ozi here.
Excellent video! Awesome to see Ozi here.

LOL, just use common sense. Electronics lose value fast. Never buy brand new & learn as much as possible about PC software & hardware that way you don't have to trust what others say. Computers are not hard to understand & you don't need advisers to tell you what you should avoid or purchase. One day this ad revenue for opinions scam will come to an end. Remember opinion's are like a-holes, everyone has them so its best not to go hunting for them unless your willing to take in a lot of them before making a decision.

I'm processing videos a few hours a day with a 5700xt. I think a 4090 would use less energy overall, process faster and help get it done before the 4PM cutoff when energy prices go higher here.
But still, it works just fine, it's well paid-for. The prices just seem so high right now, and what I have is faster than anything I could have imagined three years ago.

Your Drives are very important never cheap out on them.. That's something PPL cheap out on when doing builds and they shouldn't.. When buying an SSD or an M.2 you want to at least have a 5 year warranty even though Samsung drives last over 10 years from what I've seen.. You still want named brand SSD's either way..

I just did a spare parts build and yeah, windows unactivated runs just fine and MS seemingly permits it. You re really just paying for the watermark and the appreciation of windows itself. I ve already bought two licenses I think I ve shown my appreciation!

U gotta to be kidding me! a few years back this kid oz was giving everyone bad pc advise ,pairing bad motherboards with crap cpus and gpu s stuck with no way for an upgrade path. And then he made a video apologizing for that shit advice

For god's sake just use your old windows's serial number. I used mine (win 11) with my old win 7 serial. Just buy old os, if you had morality to not buy questionable legal os you should have morality to pay the developers.

Mr. OZ's advice is spot on. He knows the deal. Indeed, be very careful with used GPU's and do not buy a used storage drive. I've never experienced a problem with a used CPU, but only had 50% luck with GPU's.

Running Windows unactivated for 7 years wow? Windows is like winRAR now. Its unactivated on my dad's computer, and I thought it only done that for 30 days.

Also if you live in a big University city check around either on craigslist or at the Colleges for used computers or Monitors.

Now that the 4xxx series doesn't support virtual machine/OS....I think 3xxx series will hold value. Especially the 3090ti.
