we will be talking about the limitations of both the methods so that you can be the better judge of whether to use Luminosity Masks or this method given an image. I've taken myriads of classes. I taught in school settings as well as presenting industrial training. Thought myself pretty good but I've never come close to your level of instruction. Nor have I taken any classes that come within miles of what you do.
Now I could say that you speak at a good cadence for someone to get your points, which would be true. I could say that you know PS but so do a lot of other people.
Today I realized that when you present a vid you present a lesson with coherence i. e. it all fits perfectly, everything fits logically. Maybe another way of saying it would be that most instruct students so 'they can get it', you instruct so a student 'can't not get it'.
My hat, once again, is off to you and I send many warm lauds.
I wonder if you shouldn't think about a book. After all you have a built in audience.

sorry, I cannot agree with that! of course those raplid blend if options are really a great tool, and sometimes it works fine. but for a perfect blending from different exposures, this doesnt work all the time, as you want it, with luminosity masks, you have much more controll of it, and can blend it better. and for processing itself, a luminosity mask is not made for an accurate selection as you demonstrate it in the video, of course you can also make it, but its more usefull to only edit some shadow parts, or reduce the very brightest parts of an image, make some global adjustment only to midtones, change the color balance to create warmer lights, there are many more examples. And therefore you need a softer mask, that the result looks natural. for accurate and hard masks, like in you video, its a other thing.

This method works if you have a very simple picture with a fairly distinct dividing line between the two areas you want to adjust. This technique doesn't even come close to working when you have a complex landscape that has a high dynamic range with complex shapes on the horizon like trees, bushes, structures, etc. Yes, it's a quick and dirty way to do some basic exposure blending with simple compositional images. Otherwise, for most landscapes shots, luminosity masks are much more powerful, and more versitile.

Very helpful. I often find that the panels which you bring up are slightly different than the panel that I get up eg Layer style and Color range I am asuming that is caused because I have an earlier version of Photo Shop. I this case I could not get any of the sliders or eye droppers to work in color range which I dont think is a version issue. Can you please tell me what causes this as it is limiting.

Love your videos! I tried to follow the Color Range instruction on 3: 09. I am working in CS6 and when I select Highlights in the selection box, Fuzziness, Range and all he pickers are greyed out. For the world, I cannot figure out why. I am using the same image that you use. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Unmesh! A quick question. Can you link multiple layer masks from different layers, so when you paint in one of them, modifications to be applied automatically in all the other ones linked? Just as a shortcut when you need to copy-paste same mask on numerous layers, but you don; t need to have all layers in a group: -D

I never used luminosity masks in photoshop always blend if. then I went to affinity photo, there is use blend ranges. They have so much more capability than blend if. Its blend if on steroids. But if you are using photoshop I have always taught that luminosity masks are not needed as you can use blend if.

I like your information but I can't watch the videos because you really need to drink some water. There's literally constant dry-mouth smacking throughout the video. Lots of people won't notice, but the ones that do won't be able to watch the videos because of it, I assure you. I'm one of them.

Another great tutorial. As you said, both luminosity masks and blend ifs have equal validity and both as important as each other. However, one little point, I frequently manually focus for still life, macro, studio work and even landscapes.

Luminosity masks are about blending 2 or more images to get final well balanced image. In this video you just explained blend if which is not to the point. You should show how to do exposure blending differently than using luminosity masks.

Guys, actually when you are adding an adjustment layer or any other adjustment layer, the properties window opens, click the mask icon on top and then choose the color range option than do the rest. Easiest way to do that.
reply

When editing raw photos you usually work with 16bit images containing a lot of dynamic range, the blend-if option only has 256 steps, a luminosity mask on a 16bit image can have up to 65536 steps if Im not mistaken.

I like that you repeat the crucial points. I cannot be talked down enough when learning PS. I will be checking out the other tutorials when I have mastered this method

want to ask why only on 'sampled color' option the fuzziness and range adjustment are available while the rest option are greyed out? I'm using photoshop portable cs6

Can you please make a tutorial on the second layer mask? I mean photoshop allows you to use two masks but i dont understand why or what we can do with it
reply

I have been doing PS for twenty-five years and yet this refresher helped core understanding. You will go far with excellent presentations skills!

Another excellent tutorial. I am pleased that you made this tutorial. It is easier for me to apply this method than the regular luminosity mask.

Love the tutorials! Love the music at the end. Is that a version of We Are One and who is it by? Would like to play it as I am Creating!
Thanks

Likely your laptop is not like fecal matter, but Windows 10 bloated with garbage to overflowing definitely more than resembles the same.

Big tks for great ideas! But what happen if we Group an adjustment layer and masked it with the mask? we can show/hide the mask again?
