We have two examples to illustrate how to automatically add the highlights and shadows to just the right places very easily, and create intricate details to make the image come to life

I tried to do this process on a merged layer above a bunch of color grading and retouching layers, and now the image seems to be stuck on the crazy blue and pink effect right after hitting OK on the Generate Normal Map window. There is now no sign of that top layer, I can't step backward, and I'm stuck in this view. Is there anyway to undo this? Thanks so much! LOVE your content. You are my go-to person for all things Photoshop!

I read something about creating texture using cavity maps (skin detail or texture) and bringing those into photoshop. But it would be nice to have a video that explains how to apply this created detail to any photo. I did see one person who showed how to use it in Photoshop, but not how to apply it afterward to a photo.

So basically it adds shaders to the image, this technique is also implemented on the creation of materials and textures for high quality rendering, pretty interesting being used this way.

Bump maps and normal maps were one of the best improvements in video game graphics.
Just remove normal maps, displacement maps on modern games- they start looking flat af.

bro i swear I thought you were a cartoon character, I freaked out when i started watching, thought it was an animated 3d model or something. good tutorial though, thanks!

Hi! I often use High Pass filter instead and apply nearly the same way as you show to get some depth in my digital paintings. I will test the 3D Map and see whats differ.

i have photoshop cc 2018 version but under the filter tab it doesn't have the 3D option: ( is there a link where i can download the plugin please?

NOTICE: Adobe recommends a MINIMUM of 20 terrabytes of RAM and 500 exabytes of scratch disk space for optimal performance of 3D maps.

I don't have a 3D Filter in my photoshop. How to enable it in order to get the bump map? But I have a 3D dropdown menu only.
reply

I cant apply the 3D menu. It says 3D mesh presets require. I downloaded it and import to presets but nothing changed.

Well explained as usual. I'm not sure how but could be used with / instead of a displacement map? Thank you as always

I find that this has an even more noticeable effect on upscaled images. Its a really cool tip. Thanks for sharing!

All I got was a blurry black-and-white image after I did your process. You were leaving something out somewhere!

Hey there, I love to use this for my images, but photoshop 2022 is different, I could not find it, can you help me?
reply

It's absolutely nice but I don't know why those faces are looking a little distorted after applying the Bump Map.
reply

The first photo especially, after applying this process, would look even better if converted to black and white.
reply
