There are no free PDF editors. Only a tiny fraction of functions from a real editor are covered in these editors . Saving as PDF from any program is not an editor. A real editor of any format allows one to take existing code (PDF file) and manipulate it's contents, change object properties, recalculating the xref table etc. Can I change the order of objects in a PDF file? Remove a parameter of an objects transparency? Return a wrong color definition in the specs range? Convert pdf version 1.5 to 1.3? Decode stream objects? Fix badly implemented scanners mistakes? And that is not an editor, which asks me to upload my PDF to some 3rd party website. The only real editor is unfortunately the Adobe one, which can not be bought, but needs an online paid by month/year account and a proprietary software running alongside to phone home.

I ve been using Xournal for overwrites and markups of pdf s. It has a simple interface and can run on Linux or windows. My primary use for it is as a whiteboard program where I can mar pdf s during classes and also for grading. I like it because it s simple to use, and easy to learn. Text can t be edited with it, but the drawing feature works really well for my purpose#.

Users beware of PDF Escape. If you send someone an edited PDF, and they copy the text from it, it will actually copy the data that you originally had on it. Almost screwed me over when I edited an order I marked up for sale. I m not sure if it s the same for the other editors, but be careful.

Natron is a free and open-source node-based compositing software application. It has been influenced by digital compositing software such as Avid Media Illusion, Apple Shake, Blackmagic Fusion, Autodesk Flame and Nuke, from which its user interface and many of its concepts are derived.

You know... I think the PDF format is the best proof that we should only support open standards for documents and what not... Adobe's near monopoly is quite scary, with no decent PDF editor that's free because of it... and even the alternative paid ones have some issues..

We got to a point in our generation that these kinds of programs should already default on Windows and Mac systems. What's the point of buying a work computer spend all that money to still have to pay for these kinds of programs?

I bought a fully functional Nitro Pro license from a local volume licensing dealer (legit) for a fraction of the retail price, valid for the lifetime of the PC. I think this is the best deal. Who needs Adobe Acrobat?

My problem with Adobe is that their free version is extremely stingy, attempting to force you to buy an upgrade to get any useful editing out of it. That s why I use Foxit which has a much more useful free version.
