Yes, heavy weight is important for size. You will never have 20 arms if you can only curl 10kg. And just because you swing or cheat, doesnt mean you wont grow. If you have to cheat, it means your trying to move a lot of weight, and thats a very good thing. If you do it with all your moves, your whole body will be under huge loads. For example, if you have to use your shoulders and back, core and legs in order to curl a weight much more than you could if you strict curl, thats not necessarily a bad thing. You rarely see the the biggest guys being robotic strict. Moving more weight often, will will help you to get big and strong. By always being super strict, you will never ever get massive guns. And no chance on this Earth will you get huge muscles if curl 2kg weights for 100 reps instead of being able to curl 40kg for 8 reps, no fckn way. So, swing it a little if you want, not like a crazy person, just aim for more and more weight, not only will your target muscle like it, the rest of your body will too. But hey, if your super happy with the way Jeff looks, which is pretty good as a fitness look, then just use baby weights with more reps.

Best exercise I've ever found for muscle growth for me personally, is a 40rep, 4 movement superset for triceps, called 40's. (Basically 4 variations of skull crushers, 10reps each, all in quick succession)I've always used heavy weight with 8-12 reps, and always grew, but when I found this workout my triceps exploded. (I've lifted off and on for 3 decades, and these have produced everytime I've done them, even while doing them exclusively for extended periods of time) You use a light weight, one that you can do 40 reps w, obviously. But it absolutely destroys you. By the end of the first set you'll feel like you have ice water in your muscles. Extreme burn and very difficult. I've done it as an additional exercise and as a standalone, and even as a standalone it is adequate for muscle growth. The thing is that in doing this you really have to push your muscles to the limit, and by the last set you're barely hanging on. I think if you can reach that state, no matter the weight or muscle group, you'll break down the muscle to grow optimally. It's just really hard to get to that level, I mean I used to fear doing them. But worth it.

Personal exp. I lifted with light wights most of my life because it's all I could afford. I owned 120lb total pounds. My dumbell only held 35 on the bar. Im the size of Jeff but I am no way on his level. Imagine I muscular man who can't lift like he looks. That's what you get with light weight. It's fake muscle. Now I'm trying heavy and making exhalent gains. Not gonna lie I keep hurting myself but muscles heal fast and I'm buying more weights as I go. In 4 months I gained 25lbs in body mass. I added 100lbs on my bench and 30lbs on my dumbell. This is not my Max lift compacity. On short I make faster gains when I use low reps high loads. I still use low weights high reps when I'm to week the next day. When I use low weights and can't get enough reps in, I know it's time for a break. On my breaks it's time to eat and sweat using cardio mixed with very light lifting mostly for stretching. Try it see what you think. If your not hurting in the morning then your not working to your potential.

I think the amount of weight you NEED to use to gain the most mass for yourself is dependent on your frame and muscle fiber distribution. If you're like most people that don't have great amounts of type 2 muscle fibers (people that won't see results as quickly/hit max strength gains too soon) or don't have the frame to expand your upper body potential past a certain threshold then the slow and steady process of adding on more volume (through various means, not just adding on weight, but more reps, slower reps, making things harder for yourself for all of your workouts) rather than just packing on heavier weight on the barbell is for you. Add in variety too. Try resistance band training in combination with weight training.

Jeff, I'm 51 yrs old, and I've never been that guy to have bad form though out my life lifting weights. However, over the years, my shoulders have developed calcium deposits (according to a doctor years ago, and now bench press, incline press, and some what decline press I have pain and can't bring the weight all the way down to my chest. I have been doing these exercises bringing the weight down approximately 6-8 from my chest, or pretty much were I don't experience shoulder pain. Am I wasting my time doing these exercises by not doing the full movement? However, if I skip these exercises, it will limit most exercises for my chest. Dips included. Please advise. Thanks.

Jeff, not sure if you are going to see this. But please may you do a video on Cross Fit (CF? I personally incorporate CF methods in my training regime and have always utilized correct form as opposed to others who use incorrect form. Now, that being said, as many other training techniques are fractured by, are people who blame an exercise method for their injuries and so those are the most common posts out there. It would be great to see someone of your humility and honest thorough investigation into CF. I hope that's not too much to ask for sir? Either way, I'm still loving your work bud

As a natural bodybuilder for more than 7 years now, I can tell that lifting heavy plays a really important part of the equation but as Jeff said, I think It should not go consistently on the cost of your from. Not a 100% perfect form is acceptable here and there but no for a long time. You should always go back and fix your form with heavy weights as well occasionally. Stretch where it's needed and do plenty physiotherapeutic exercises in order to avoid injury coz guess what, at the end of the day injury is what stops you progressing not that extra couple pounds of weight.

Plz bro. Cant anyone just explain it in a dumb proof way? Its simple Heavy lifting means that you figure out what the max weight you can lift without losing form in say 4-6 reps. If you are lifting in good form to 15 reps its light. If i do bench and I need to move my back in anyway to get the bar back up it is bad form. I can use my legs to power the bar back up but my back needs to move with my legs in a clean even motion. Dont separate the 2 Good form and heavy lifting are in the same Once you split them peopld get confused. Lift heavy with good form. Simple

Just a quick point about concentric vs eccentric and what you said about how many concepts are relative to the situation. Some armwrestlers in some of their training sessions purposely only the concentric (lift dumbell with one hand, lower it with both) because the eccentric causes more damage to the muscle, so you can train more often by removing the negative. This is of course not suitable for hypertrophy, but with strength (particularly with forearms) innervation/muscular recruitment play a big role.
