The Best & Worst BACK Exercises (Ranked With Science)

The Best & Worst BACK Exercises (Ranked With Science)

FBTwitterReddit

video description

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
I rank 20 of the most popular back exercises for hypertrophy on a tier list from S (for Super) to F (for Fail. We’ll be judging the exercises based on three criteria: 1) stretch and tension, 2) good feel, and 3) simple progression. At the end, I’ll also be crowning one exercise the best back exercise and one exercise as the worst. In almost all of these exercises you bend your arms, involving a lot of biceps. For people struggling to grow, try to keep your arm in a fixed position at all times, it isolates your back. There is a reason why the nautilus pullover machine is the best lat exercise you can do, it completely removes your arms out of the equation, which also happens with a dumbbell pullover, but the nautilus is full range of motion.

You may answer this in the video later, but regarding the barbell row variations:
Wondering if the ranking of these changes if you are performing any of the movements on a smith machine Stabilization is less of a factor on smith since the barbell slides along the tracks. Mostly asking for the benefit of people who can only really access smith machines at gyms like Planet Fitness. Great stuff so far, Jeff!

No disrespect to you Jeff and I know I can’t say this. But looking at your physique it looks dam good and you very knowledgeable to building a physique to be a natural. This is why I call BS to a lot of these guys who clam to be natty. Cause all they do is give credit to themselves. The way I see it we ALL have to learn from someone. Just my opinion.

Heavy rack pulls will absolutely put slabs of muscle on your back if done right. I don't do them anymore because there are better movements, like flexion rows variants, Jefferson curl variants or back extension variants for lower back, but they aren't useless like renegade rows and similar nonsense.

Disagree with deadlift not being into D or F tier. Yes, it give beef to your erectors. isometrically. Why do we boldly talk about the ineffectiveness of isometric exercises for hypertrophy, but are afraid to say this about the deadlift

Watched recent video from Chris Heria about 10 minutes dumbell workout. I was like: It must be good - and one of the first exercises he decided to show is the first Jeff ranking if F tier. i mean. Chris Heria is cringe.

Breathing is way easier on the cable row, I always feel like chest-supported rows either deflate me or have me holding my breath. For me, the best of the best is definitely a tie between pulldowns and cable rows

For your inverted row, just slap on a weight vest. Mine has 2. 5 lb increments all the way to 50 lbs. progression solved. Balancing lose weights on you body is never a good situation.

It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.
