The American Kettlebell Swing - The WORST Exercise Ever! As a follow up to the Kettlebell Science video I wanted to take a look at the American Kettlebell Swing. This movement was demonized in the comments and is frequently bashed by the fitness industry. So is The American Kettlebell Swing, also known as The Crossfit swing or Overhead Swing the WORST exercise ever?

KBs are amazing, KB swings are amazing, the -American- KB swing has no functional use what so ever. The swing, in general, is a hip hinge motion and is designed to work the posterior chain. Going over head in the manner that people do doesn't make sense. IF you want to go overhead then do a KB snatch and do it right but if you wanna swing. eye level is all you need.

Well said! However, when you pin your hands together on a KB it gets really hard on your rotator cuffs, due to the internal rotation. When there is a better safer option available why do the overhead version. Sure, it-s different for everybody, as long as you feel alright, it-s not a problem but I wouldn-t recommend my clients to ever do it.

I am working with a shoulder labrum tear (upper and lower) and a kettlebell is my way of reintroducing weight back to training. The American Swing helps me find safe movement and strengthen my shoulder, back and it's great for me.
If your lifting too heavy and your posture sucks it's just asking for injury.

I don't do the American swing because I see structural issues with the shoulders and neck and because it typically changes the hip hinge I'm trying to work. Plus if I'm going to swing overhead, I'll just do a snatch. I'm not terribly opposed to the movement, I just don't see a reason to do it.

I found this video after posting a question about the swing. I'd ask you to breakdown the swing because I've never felt exerted when doing the swing, even using a 50 pound bell. Thanks, but this sort of pushed me away from wanting to use the swing in my workout.

I like the American swing. I would say the snatch is much more likely to cause I jury for me personally based on my own limitations. Snatches and cleans cause my body aggravation and American swings cause me absolutely none. For whatever that-s worth -

I was wondering if this wold be a good exercise for the new US Army Combat Fitness Test, particularly the Standing Power Throw?
Watching this, it feels like the American Kettlebell Swing is almost a full motion, weighted build up to the event.

I don't think swings, in general, are that great to begin with. Am I missing something? Could I be using too little weight? I am 195 lbs and use a 35lb bell. I know i could use more weight but it seems this 35lbs is recommended for men.

Bravo, well said - This is how a great coach think - the American swing is better for me than the normal because it doesn't hurt my back, I am very overjoint, have EDS and my back is very curved, like a duck.

The move is not evil, the biggest mistake is utilizing a weight that cannot be handle by the individual and that will definitely lead to injury but as mentioned any move not done properly will lead to injury
