Looking for family- and dog-friendly things to do in Moab? Travel with us to majestic Utah and join our cinematic family adventure on a trip to the incredible archeological site Newspaper Rock and hike to Grandstaff Canyon which ends at the magnificent Morning Glory Bridge.
In Part 1 (of 3) of our Moab vacation we go on a 5ish mile round trip hike through Grandstaff Canyon (formerly known as Negro Bill Canyon. The majority of the trail is shaded and level, with zigzags across a stream that flows through the lush canyon. Towards the end there is a bit of scrambling up some sandstone, but the end is in sight! The hike culminates at Morning Glory Bridge, which is the 6th largest rock span in the United States. It is an impressive 243-foot arch spanning across the canyon, and it's a popular spot for people to rappel (abseil) too!
We also take a little road trip down to Newspaper Rock, just an hour south of Moab, where there are over 650 petroglyphs recorded by the Native American Archaic, Anasazi, Fremont, Navajo, Anglo, and Pueblo people. The pictures were created by carefully pecking away the desert varnish that gradually forms on exposed sandstone due to rainfall and bacteria, creating a thin dark layer on top of the rock. When the layer is removed the lighter rock is exposed underneath, creating the perfect canvas for petroglyphs which are preserved for thousands of years.
