Alcatraz Slot Canyon: One Persons Nightmare is Another's Adventure - Mountain trips

Alcatraz is a slot canyon in the desert of southern Utah. This canyon could be considered Mother Natures way of hazing the uninitiated who wish to join the world of canyoneering. It is a physically brutal canyon that damages everything that dares enter its tight corridors. People get trapped in Alcatraz, pinned between its sandstone walls, and it's not hard to see why. Just watch and about half way through you'll see panic on our faces as we squeeze through some very tight spots. Brizzle: I did Alcatraz with a group of 6 on 4/01/22. We had to split into 2 groups to lessen the chaos. I am 5'11 160 lbs and got stuck. Luckily it was a fairly simple spot for my friend to help me get unstuck. Another guy in our party was stuck for half an hour.
We spent a ton of time stemming and there were many places that if we had fallen down, it would have been nearly impossible to get out of. I passed those parts on pure adrenaline.
It was a very fun experience and beautiful. The one thing I recommend to anyone is if there is any doubt whether you will fit, go high instead of low. Stemming is tiring, but getting unstuck is even more tiring.

I actually seriously considered doing this, but took a deep look inside myself and decided no. I did a hike last weekend that was out of my comfort zone and this looks way more challenging than what i did. Thanks for posting the video. Ill enjoy this one thru the screen.

If you cant walk on the canyon floor, gravity is your enemy in terms of getting a body part wedged. Some people welcome that challenge. No rope can save you if you slip. A body part that goes in a crevice may not come out. No way for me.

People are starting to Fandom you fellas. Stop being so charismatic, handsome and funny. Although Matt forgot to comb his hair with his bedhead. Unless he meant to do that. I heard you guys are nuts. Rather wondering the same.

After having a bonafide panic attack in the Squeeze in St. George's Pioneer Park (I eventually pushed my way through, but that first attempt was no bueno) I can happily say I'd pass on this trip. Nicely done, gents.

Never been claustrophobic but that gave me the Willies. I've only done Pine Creek in Zion in the spring. Never been so friking cold. Had to run through it in about 90 minutes. So great to feel the sun.

There is no way. Im fat and old and very claustrophobic. Only way out for me was to get stuck then wait for a couple of weeks to lose enough weight to get out. Not a good plan. Congrats on doing it.

Sweet Video again! many of your adventures make me nervous just a tiny bit and I love it!
Looked fun for a 135 pounder like me! Thanks for sharing again, you guys rock!

I'm surprised that the sheer weight of your gigantic balls didn't serve to drag you down into those terrifying crevices! Did you all bring lube in case someone got stuck?

Gives me a bit of PTSD from my trip down the canyon. I had the same experience with all of my gear being destroyed! Great job on the video!

Saw a flash flood in person once, now I have to control fear anytime I'm in a slot. This would cause a panic attack. No thank you!

OK, I can't even watch this, not to say do it! I'd rather do base jumping which I sure don't want to do at all!
reply

I'm not claustrophobic, but watching that was making me nervous. Good thing it didn't rain while you were down there!

That looks bonkers! Love all the stuff you guys do, and lots of it I fancy having a go at, but not that one! NOPE!

I like slot canyons and all, but I think I'll wait a few thousand years for the water to widen that crack a bit.

Nice, cool adventure. But I would prefer 4K quality. I believe I've seen an earlier episode in 4k, am I right?
reply

I've done caves similar to that and aren't nervous at all while doing it, but watching this gave me anxiety
