5 things you will love and hate about visiting Athens, Greece Niko: Some of your comments are extremely misleading, and therefore, people who desire to visit Athens get a completely wrong view. First and foremost, who ever heard of a salad that costs 2 or 3 euros, which is about 2. 50 or 3. 25 US dollars. The Greek salad is like a meal onto itself because you get a generous plate of tomatoes (real ones, lots of feta cheese, cucumbers, olives, peppers, and authentic Greek olive oil. The average cost of a Greek salad is around 5-7 euros or 5. 50-7. 50 US dollars. WHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD WOULD YOU GET A SALAD AT THAT PRICE? 98% of the taxi drivers that I have come across are honest hard working people, and believe me I visit Athens every December and the summer as well. Most importantly, all taxis have METERS so that way you don't get ripped off. You mix some truth about Athens with a few false misconceptions about this historic city and then feed it to the public on the you tube platform. As another person indicated, Go outside of Plaka (tourist area) and meet the locals, that's where real culture is.

greek salad is a tourist inception, this salad originally called village's salad dejavu ive been typing these things again, and has apart from cucumber and tomato, which the tomato salad is, olives, chopped onion, green bell pepper, maybe caper or other fresh herbs like glistrida and ofcourse a full portion of feta on top, the feta alone may triple the cost of a salad, the scam may be take place on the amount of the feta on the salad vs a separate portion, at the end of the day, u may need 2 greek salads per day, get full and leaner simutanusley while 5 tomato salads will just make you even more hungrier, thats a very lame way to try cut 0. 50euro cost. its like goin in starbucks with ur own coffe mug and asking for a 0. 05 dollar deduction in price cause u saved them a cup, so lame

The best ways to not deal with the Taxi thing, is to Uber, it's cheap, its easy, and you don't need to speak the language. We loved Greece, the people, the food, and on and on, but did get caught in a strike. We loved it so much that Im trying to figure out how to do the XPAT thing there now.
BTW, if you get to Mykonos make the extra trip to Delos this is an island archaeological site that you can explore on your own, it was better that anything in Athens, not that Athens is not an amazing place to see for ruins.
Love Wolters World, just jealous of all the cool places you go to. We on our way to marking off many of the same locations from our Bucket-List.

I'm actually in Athens, they don't respect the traffic lights, red or green they don't stop and they don't care, even in kolonaki or glyfada, two of the chic areas of Athens, they just don't respect the stop sign or red or green light
They drive on the sidewalks, they smoke inside the cafes, the bars and restaurants and and it's full, extremely full of Pickpockets, everywhere, every time, they can follow you all the day to steal your stuff and they work in groups so be very very careful because it's really bad when you lose your money, passport and credit cards, Athens is the heaven for Pickpockets

Tourists visit Greek restaurants, but few of them leave TIPS for the hardworking waiter who hardly earns enough to make ends meet, then you complain about the prices? The American tourist is the best when it comes to leaving tips, because it is part of American culture to leave a tip. In the USA it is 20% of you restaurant bill. HOWEVER, some other tourists who are stingy (mean/cheap) leave NOTHING for the waiter. They sit there for hours and order next to NOTHING. Come to NYC and see the restaurant prices here and then compare.

Many people in the comment section are talking about Exarchia. I don't recommend it to typical tourists but it could be an interesting place for more alternative ones, always during daylight. It's the anarchist area, it has junkies, lots of graffiti and dirt, but it also has many really cool cafes and bars where many artists and students hangout and maybe the only place you can see written on a wall the phrase only cops and fascists are in danger here! . It has something rock.

Greek salad is actually more expensive than the regular salad because you get a whole chunk of feta with it. Regular salad is just tomatoes and cucumbers So if you buy the regular salad + feta seperately price would be pretty much the same. However, in some touristic restaurants prices can be very high, but that's the case everywhere in the world as far as I know.

You are wrong about greek salad! 6 for a greek salad is normal! I could say, it's cheap enough! It contains tomato, cucumber, onion, peper, olives, cheese, oliveoil, oregano. and it always goes with bread. It's a full lunch. Also I have leaved in Athens for totally more than 10 years. I have never met any protest on my way! I always heard about it on the news.

To give you an idea of why a Greek salad costs 5 to 7 euros.
The feta cheese costs anywhere from 7 to 10 euros per kilo. The olive oil 5 to 8 euros per kilo. Table olives 2, 5 to 5 euros per kilo.
Of course, the prices are based on the quality of the products, the quantity and whether you buy them from the supermarket or a producer.
