I always shut the main water pipe. Then turn on shortly the other taps to let the pressure off. Especially when your absent in winter and leave the house with a turned off heating or your heating system breaks down. Freezing temperatures can make your pipes burst.

depending upon your town/municipality. sometimes you alert the police that you will be gone and they will do periodic drive-by checks. They will ask you things like. any lights on timers? or which curtains and shades will be open or closed.
