I believe you are doing a mis-service by downplaying the safety issues in Rio. Most seasoned travelers are up to speed on the do's and don'ts. This advice is for the tourist. Especially Americans that stick out like a sore thumb. Loud, very white, back packs full of junk, etc. are crook magnets. Get a local guide! You can arrange this at your hotel or taxi. Please go to a Favela if you want to get shot, kidnapped and raped. Yes, they are that bad. Beach at night. should be a no-brainier, but let me reiterate. don't even think about it. Stick to public areas with lots of people or go with a guide/local. I would say use common-sense, but I know there are a few out there that lack it big time. DO NOT wear jewelry, period. DO NOT flash cash, wallets, etc. In a nut shell, don't attract attention. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you can't afford to lose it, don't bring it.

Dont have your iPhone out: a few days ago I was sitting in an uber with the window down (windows have to be down bc of COVID) and someone reached through the window of the car and grabbed my phone off my leg in the middle of the road.
Dont have your iPhone out. Im actually now going to buy a burner phone for going to the beach and such.

Also there's nothing wrong with JUST enjoying the beach/pools/hotel ammenities ( which some are so good that you dont need to go out and off the beaten path ) Best to stay out of trouble and any unnecessary stressful situations. Vacations are meant for chillin/relaxing. Not stressing out over running around town etc.

Let me fix a very funny mistake especially for brazilians, the fabric is called CANGA, not CONGA. CONGA was a very ugly shoe the kids used in the 80. The other thing is, the girls wear BIKINIS on the beach, and what you call Speedo here is called SUNGA. I hope that help.

It seems like parts of the city really have a problem with poverty but my god is that city just gorgeous. The mix of the beaches, the city itself, the mountains, that statue? you put it all together and it doesn't even seem real.

Oh Yeah, the nudity thing at the beach. It seems like the older men get the smaller their speedos are too. Good God, we were in Hawaii and some old man was wearing a speedo so damn small, I swear one of his balls were hanging out!

I'm of two minds about visiting favelas-on one hand, it can be dangerous; on the other, there are some nice places up there-a friend ate at a restaurant in one-it was great-the money you spend there will help some poor people.

I will stay safely in Mississippi and i will pop Blame it on Rio into my dvd player ( or stream it on Netflix) if i feel the urge to vizit Brazil. Most North Americans are not wealthy enough to run to Brazil for vacation. lol

You went to Brazil with your wife. There's a saying for that:
Carrying a timber into the woods.
(sorry if it sounds rude, it was intended to sound funny)
