I grew up in San Diego from 1968 to 1981. I don't recognize any of this food as San Diegan. There was Mexican food, but not carne asada fries, nor California burritos (with french fries inside. Lobsters are not from San Diego, so it was an extra expensive thing. There were fish tacos, but they wern't a big thing. No craft beer. The Gas Lamp District was a derelict area. I guess the main thing that distinguished San Diego, at least from the East or Midwest was the fact that there even were tacos, enchiladas, tostadas, and other Mex food at all.
We were big into avocado, like avocado on bread with lemon--just a normal food, not a hipster thing.
How times change. This new San Diego is something completely different.

My wife and I lived in San Diego through the 90s and I never had any of the foods you talked about. Our staples back then were In 'n out, fish tacos at Rubio's, Stuart Anderson's Black Angus in El Cajon, Lotsa Pasta, and especially Panda Inn in Horton Plaza. Additionally, there were 4 or five excellent Chinese restaurants in greater San Diego we loved. We also loved a restaurant called Guadalajara Grill in Old Town before the entire kitchen staff was deported. I worked for the publisher of The San Diegan, and the owner gave me hundreds of dollars worth of certificates to very expensive restaurants in Del Mar and La Jolla. The high-end restaurants in San Diego do not disappoint. They were amazing!

Interestingly, in Latin American (and im willing to bet also Asian, African, Indigenous, and Arabic) cultures we dont have the equivalent of the term foodie. Food is our life, our medicine, a central part of family and social gathering- food is how we celebrate, express abundance and tradition. Food is everything. All this to say foodie was an awkward term to explain to my fam back in Chile.

Roberto's Taco Shop is the original -bertos. Everyone else is a copycat. I avoid all the other -bertos as the quality just isn't there. The best California burrito I've had was at El Cilantro's. The flour tortilla was homemade fresh. The used shoe string fries. However, that was over 7 years ago.

I love to go to the Children's Pool in La Jolla, at night. catch me a young seal and take it home and grill it. medium, medium rare. yummy, soooooo good.
I'm surprised this guy didn't cover the wonderful ways to enjoy Harbor seal.

When I think off food in San Diego I remember what Anthony bourdain said in an interview about where to eat in the city. He basically just said with all due respect I'd just cross the border to eat in Tijuana at Mission 19.

Sad that theres no mention of Filippis in Jamul. Forget the other locations, this one does it the best. It might be a bit of a drive if youre in the city but itll be all worth it when you actually try the pizza.

I've lived in SoCal 22 years, but have never eaten anything in San Diego. Planning lunch there tomorrow with my hubby and none of what you mentioned interested me. Little Italy is more our speed.
