How much do I tip in Ecuador? Do I even tip while I am in Ecuador? Yes, you do tip when you visit Ecuador. Here are some of the times and amounts you should tip when you travel to Ecuador. Of note the official currency of Ecuador is the US Dollar, and of course tipping is a personal decision, but in a country like Ecuador tips (even small tips) can make a major impact for your service staff. Restaurants: Taxes and Service are usually included in the bill or the price of your food. However, not all restaurants put the service and tax on. Your best bet is to tip an additional 5% on top of the final bill. Leave the tip as cash to make it easier for the waiter. You also make sure the waiter gets the money and do not just leave the tip on the table and leave. Tour Guides: Tours in Ecuador are great and we have found Ecuador to have some of the best guides around. You tip about $10 per day per person for a full day tour. About $5-8 per day per person for a half day tour. Tour Drivers: You tour driver receives about half of what you tip your tour guide. Typically about $5 per person per day. Taxis: You do not tip taxis in Ecuador. You pay the fair that is displayed on your meter. Make sure you use only official taxis. So ask your hotel to call one for you if you do need one. You can round up the bill to the next 50 cents or $1. 00 to make it easier with change. Hotel Cleaning Staff: Leave $2-$5 per day on the bed when you leave for the day. This significantly helps the cleaning staff and we have found leads to a very tidy room and even more helpful service. Leave closer to $5 if you have a bigger room or a family room. A Special

My family is from Ecuador. Being raised there, as a child, my dad made me tip 10% on restaurants with the exception of Fast Food Chains and told me that if your restaurant has a personal waiter, you should tip. Also anywhere the service is great. If you buy fruits on the street, and the change is 15-50 cents, to tell the people to keep the change. Most people look so happy after that. But my friends and classmates rarely, if ever, tip, and sometimes made me feel bad for tipping because according to them I was screwing the system for poorer people. I also tip the guys who bag the groceries at the supermarkets. Hairdressers, taxi cabs if their service was superb.

Great advice and thank you for sharing. I spent three months in Ecuador this past winter. I spent most of that time in Banos. What I like most was the public markets with all the fresh produce. The assortment of fruits and vegetables was staggering and colorful. I am however concerned about the new requirement for medical insurance for entry to Ecuador beginning May 1, 2018. Do you know anything about this new requirement? I really enjoy your videos and humor.

This is interesting! I was just there 2 weeks ago. My family is from gueyaquil. Me being from Los Angeles and them living in Ecuador they did take me to Cuenca. I would ask them about tipping at places and I swear they would say they dont tip. Only maybe at restaurants. And trust me my family is wealthy over there. But then again I guess thats how the rich stay rich! To each there own. I did tip were I thought was necessary but then again. Im American!

My girlfriend is from Quito and has told me not to tip. I understand as a Canadian the customs we have in North America but dont think you have to tip 15-20% everywhere in the world. If you had great service and a good time leaving $1-2 is a nice gesture. Look forward to more South America videos!

Thanks for the vid Mark. Sometimes travelers (particularly Europeans) think tipping is this anomaly that only happens in the US but videos like these show that there is a tipping culture in many countries (including some in Europe) throughout the world.

Great to know I will be in Ecuador within the next week in a half. Currently in Colombia and a lot of people really like tips here. They always say if you want to tip you can but we never feel forced. Except for taxis we dont.

Tipping is a disagreeable practice anywhere. Tipping is warranted only for something provided that is out of the ordinary. The employers failure to pay a decent wage does not become the customers responsibility to make up.

As usual, great advice on tipping. Thanks for posting despite knowing the negative comments are sure to post. Oh and the Posada Del Angel looks very cool. Love the central courtyard setup.
