Some lightweight teardrop-style travel trailers are able to be told with smaller crossover SUVs and minivans. Pay attention to the towing rating of your vehicle and the dry weight of the camper youre interested in. Dry weight is the trailer without your stuff in it. Interestingly the Ford Mustang is rated to tow 1, 000 pound. Thats a proper teardrop camper. Motorcycles also can tow these campers. The teardrop-style are smaller travel trailers that are a lil bit heavier. They can be towed behind a Honda Odyssey (advised to modify transmission. They have a dinette sleeper, a bed, and, usually yet not always, a jackknife sleeper sofa. Perfect for a couple or a smaller 3-4 member family.

Just rent Mark! I know more than a couple of outdoor enthusiasts who purchased RVs or campers only to regret it almost immediately. Sure that first summer vacation was as amazing as one can imagine but then the RV/camper just sits next to the house for months on end. Plans for all those long weekend trips never materialized. You end up flying the family somewhere the next summer and now you've used your cool RV/camper only a few times in two years and eventually put it up for sale. Super fun way to explore the country but think long and hard before making an investment.

I am from Germany and we are planning a trip to the USA. We would like to do an RV Trip even though its much more expensive. A night at a Campground near/at Grand Canyon costs about 30$. A Hotel at the same nationalpark would cost much more. Even though a rental car would be much cheaper than an RV you dont need to go to Restaurants and Hotels/Motels and save up some money. The olny thing i am a bit afraid of is driving in big cities. But i guess we will park our RV at a Campground near the city and explore the city with puplic transportation.

Dont go out and buy a new RV until you know what you want. Find a slightly used unit that was well cared for and have it inspected by a rv mechanic that does not sell rvs. Mobile rv repairs places are great for this. If you have a decent tow vehicle you are half way there. An rv also makes a good guest quarters for vistors. Plenty good deals out there for less than 10k. A week rental can cost you over 1k. There is no perfect type rv. I suggest a sub 26 ft trailer for the first rv.

These guys appear retired and can do it all summer (or maybe they're teachers. We did it in a car for 2 weeks in June and drove 4000 miles and stayed at dirt cheap motels with free breakfasts. Once or twice we stayed in the tent like in Monument Valley Utah for example. Afterwards we wish we had a pull-behind to sleep in. But you still need to use toilets somewhere or even showers.

I have a question for all the travelers out there. Recently, the travel bug bit me and I went throughout Europe and the Caribbean and it was really great. But lately I have lost the motivation or the drive to go out and see the world, which sucks because I really want to. So how would you get past feeling stagnated about traveling, and get that amazing feeling of adventure back?

it's super fun - we did it last summer. but it's a LOT of work when you also have younger children (mine were 4 and 7 then. it's more of a trip than a vacation, if you know what i mean? a lot of cooking! i hope to try it again in a few years when the kids can help more, if my husband will go along. he is still tired from driving around northern California. have fun!

Mark and Jocelyn, please consider buying a renovated school bus if you are going to buy. They are much better built than an RV and you can get some that have really been decorated nicely. Take a look at skoolie. net for some great ideas and advice (I am not affiliated with the management of that web site.

My (much) better half and I have rented a relatively small RV twice now. once in Australia's Northern Territory and most recently out of Las Vegas to spend a week in Death Valley.
Each time we've seen and done things that I think we would have missed had we been in hotel at the same sites.

While I love hotels, they can be pricey and they can sometimes let you down on expectations. RV'ing gets you out to the great outdoors and let's you appreciate nature. It's a great anxiety reliever for sure and helps kids and parents reconnect since technology is limited or eliminated altogether.
