Backpacking With My Dog in Dolly Sods (4K) Jo: bringing moist snacks for your dog is helpful. they are heavier than normal food items you bring but if they are loaded in moisture fat and nutrients they will take your dog a very long way especially through long dry gaps in the trail. sometimes its hard to get a dog to drink as much as they should on these kinds of hikes to keep them hydrated and avoiding injury. using a squirt bottle to get it directly in their mouth is efficient as well as only pouring out around an ounce or so at a time if putting it in a bowl. and when feeding time comes add water to that meal too. the morning of a hike i add a cup of water to my dogs dry kibble and a spoon of coconut oil and dried coconut and an apple core as well as some heaping tablespoons of all meat canned dog food. .
on the trail i have 1 apple so i can give my dog the core-seeds removed, a few carrots and a few celery sticks for my dog + nut butter.
my dog stays pretty well hydrated even on hot days. they get so caught up in the excitement of it all you've got to be more on top of making sure they hydrate then you normally would. i found carrying wet snacks to be more efficient overall for my dog than having more extra water since a portion of the water always gets wasted but none of the moisture in the food gets wasted.

Love the vid fellas - I am a West Virginia native and discovered and fell in love with Dolly Sods in May of 2020. A few friends of mine and myself tried to park at that same parking lot at the Blackbird Knob Trailhead that you guys did, and also had no idea about the parking permit. We discovered that the parking lot about a mile down the road that you pass before you arrive at the parking permit lot had no indicators that it required a parking permit. We ended up parking there and hiking to the trailhead from there, which wasn't that bad. We were worried that we would get a ticket anyway, but ended up not receiving one after staying overnight, even though parking enforcement had issued tickets at the parking permit lot near the trailhead.
Long story short, if you guys or anyone else cannot get a parking permit for the parking permit lot closest to the Blackbird Knob trailhead, try the lower parking lot that is about a mile down-road from the direction that you came in. Also be sure to check the signs there to make sure nothing has been added about needing tickets there!
Cheers!

Great video guys. First of all I have watched all of your videos numerous times never get tired of them and may I say it-s refreshing and satisfying to watch an hour plus video that doesn-t have a commercial every seven minutes. That is one of the biggest distractions of other videos I have had to watch from other creators and it-s so frustrating that I have stop watching their videos. Yours are supreme and beautifully done and entertaining to the max. I-ve been a fan for years and I will continue to be. I would love to see you guys go to glacier national park. continued friendship and success to you all.

I wish I could afford to support you guys, but know you've encouraged me to get out again. I haven't been hiking or camping since my late 30s (I'm in my 50s now) - was hit by a car when walking in 2008 and have never been the same. Lost my life's savings and home in Indiana. have determined through you guys and a few others to get out and do this again. Has been a long battle with my injuries and health as well as finances.

My brother and I are going to Dolly Sods this October and we're taking our pups with us, so finding your video was pretty nice. It'll be our first time going to West Virginia and our first time backpacking together too. We're thinking of doing Bear Rock and Lion Head loop (found it on AllTrails and the 20-ish miles seems perfect for our 3 day/2 night plans. Any pointers for us beginners?

Thomas - Your beautiful Sierra will/is the most faithful and loving soul mate you will ever have. The look in her eyes as she looks at you says so. At her young age she is doing awesome on this hike. Don't worry about her being clean or dirty - like a normal kid, the dirtier they get = the more fun they had. The more AA's videos I watch, the more I enjoy them!

I have a camp just to the north at Mt. Storm lake. My father established the camp as a base to explore the surrounding area. We backpacked thru the wilderness area back during the eighties before the crowds discovered it. It has always been a magical place to me. Thank You for capturing the essence of -Heaven-.

Another great vid guys. I've never been a fan of any dehydrated breakfast that involves rehydration of eggs and such. I just stick to quaker oats and some dehydrated fruit and your'e good to go. I still don't understand why all of the other dehydrated meals are good but never the breakfast ones.

There's one thing about all this that stands out as a bit jarring. The years and years of vids are all amazing and positive and encouraging and kindly, but Thomas too often puts in a cynical or negative last word, that sucks the joy out of it.
