Athens: What NOT to do in Athens, Greece - Wolters World zBijs: For Athens, a similar advice as you gave for Atlanta: better don't go in the middle of the summer. Best visit mid-april to early June, or September to mid-October. Not to mention the accomodation prices, they are the highest on July-August (that is for all over Greece. It is not so humid, on the contrary it is pretty dry climate. But still, temps of 35-40 celcius in a city overloaded with concrete (very few open/green spaces) makes walking around the city unbearable during the day. The locals? they are somehow used to it or they do not have a choice, but anyone working indoors, or driving, is doing so under an always-on airco. Mid of summer is good for islands, sea, beach, if you are mostly into night clubbing, and not so keen on history and nature/exploration. (My credentials: lived in Athens for 30+ years.

I think the biggest don't about being in Athens is don't forget to take in this stunning city's beauty. My hubby and I are currently staying and working in Athens for six weeks and pretty much every morning when we wake up we can't quite believe we can see the Acropolis from our bedroom window. I have to pinch myself lol
The only thing I don't agree with in this video Mark, and I know I'm at risk of sounding like a picky so-and-so, but I honestly don't find anything wrong with Athens tap water, It's very safe and high quality. We never buy bottled water here.

At 5: 37, there is a bald man that exits a market store. Feeling excited, since he just purchased a relatively nice tchotchke, he attempts to arm himself with said tchotchke. As he places it over his noggin', a look of pure bewilderment passes over his face. Realizing he cannot return said tchotchke, the look quickly turns to disgust. He wishes now that he haggled the price down and paid in cash, per the recommendations in this video. Great video, btw, and good tips! :)

I had to walk through a protest to get to my hotel as the streets were closed where the hotel was. The taxi driver tried but was unable to get me close. The driver told me which way to go and I had a map. I walk up a street and coming the other way is the protest. Ok I will wait till they pass, and they stop. Wait a little and then just walked though the middle, the people were great they gave me room to pass through. Just another travel story to add to the collection.

So agree with not driving in Athens central. Public transport is so easy )despite the language differences) and even walking is not such a schlepp as you find many interesting things around the most unexpected corners. Our hotel overlooked one of the main roads from Omonia square to Piraeus and I watched every day in amazement at how they avoided accidents despite the crazy driving!

According to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) not only is tap water in Athens completely safe to drink it's rated as the cleanest and safest in the world. The locals buy bottled water for convenience and because bottled water in Greece is fairly cheap, in some places you can find 4x for 1 euro.

One thing I remberd with some islands with Greece is make sure you have a good bag with wheels as this will be your car if walking not many lifts or dodgy ones wont take you to the correct floor make sure its not the left side its bit crazy

Follow the crowds is really good advice. There have been a lot of ugly muggins when turists try to find solitary places around Parthenon. Greeks have real moneyproblems and a very few takes chances. So take care. Solid vid as always.

I agree with this but it is best to visit Parthenon in the late afternoon where many of the cruise ship tourists have disappeared - it is crowded in the morning. Many main tourist sites are at walkable distance anyway

This is a very charming country and easy to get to, I hope I can return to visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
