We 'yank each other's chains' endlessly here. Might be a hangover from The Troubles. Of using black humour as a defence / coping mechanism.
You'll get a visitor's pass as a tourist. However, you'll know when you're accepted here, because the local people you've fallen in with, will tease you as they would, one of their own. Teasing includes insults about everything imaginable. If you 'can't take a joke', you won't make many friends here. Such teasing is delivered deadpan between good friends. Perhaps with a sideways smile with someone you don't know so well. It's a bit like humour in the Armed Forces. It's always meant to include. Not exclude.

One thing to note is that public transport does not run till late - some bus routes only run til 9pm! On Sundays, buses only start at noon. Also, Friday/Saturday night is crazy difficult to get a cab, especially around 1am and 3am due to establishments closing and people heading home. If you need to take a cab around those times, pre-book one and be prepared for it to show up 10 minutes early
On Sunday most shops open only from 1pm to 6pm - only convenience stores are open outside those hours!

To add to all that: the locals (understandably) seemingly can get a bit iffy if you write 'peace' messages on the Peace Wall. They see the Wall as a way of for example avoiding a Molotov Cocktail landing in your garden so be aware and don't be 'condescending'. And watch what you wear in the Shankill or Falls - anything 'British-looking' should be avoided in the latter and anything too 'Irish-looking' in the former (this means for example sports team tops. Otherwise a great video once again Mark.

i'm from london but moved to belfast for uni, and when some family came over to visit me, i took them on the bus tour to see the murals and my sister started laughing at a mural of the queen, since its literally just something you would never expect to see in london. i had to tell her to be quiet so quickly before people heard her. respecting the murals no matter personal bias is definitely one of the most important points!

Great to see people coming to my home city again.
But I will say this, if you are planning on travelling outside of the city, hire a car. Because the public transport outside of the major towns and cities can be a bit hit and miss.
Also, the ulster museum does have an exhibit about the troubles on the ground floor.

From personal experience and view, for me the donts of Belfast are - Dont visit if you have different (dark) skin colour, dont visit if your from Eastern Europe as will not be safe for you, this is the Europes capital of RACISM. If you want to experience NI OR Ireland visit NEWRY OR DUBLIN

I'm from Belfast and honestly when I started watching I thought there were gonna be a lot of inaccuracies and ill-informed opinions as is often the case with North American guides/videos in Belfast.
I was pleasantly surprised! Very well done in both your research and your presentation.

Hello from Texas. Our 16 y/o son may be going to UK (Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, London) in July this year! I'm so excited for him! We're encouraging him to learn as much as he can about each city and to try all the local foods Thanks for this video =)
