Great info! We were in the same places last week and were amazed at the architecture in the historic district. The food is incredible and I highly recommend ceviche and other seafood.
A pickpocket attempted to get into my backpack as we were walking among the tiendas/restaurants in that area. Luckily I caught him before his hand touched my backpack and he walked off very fast after he was exposed. The locals keep their phones under their belts with their shirt covering them.
The La Mariscal district is home to a lot of nightlife and restaurants. I highly recommend going there.
Also highly recommended is the Teleferiqo tram that provides incredible views from approximately 16, 000 feet. We made 2 mistakes tho: take warm clothes and dont go on a weekend in the afternoon as it was very busy. We tried to hike around but the elevation proved to be difficult to deal with. Dont lose your ticket as you will need it to get down.
Also, bring lots of sunscreen as it is very expensive in Ecuador.

Haha. I live in Quito and everything you said is on point. I also wouldn't recommend eating any street food. You may get food poisoned and diarrhea. However, the EMMAPS ( water supply facility for the city of Quito) tested the waters several times (literally) and they came out with a report stating that IT IS drinkable. The problem may be the pipelines since most in the city center's are rusty the water may be contamined. Also, watch out for taxi drivers rounding the numbers on those fares. You pay for your ride and they would keep the change.

Bought my late grandfather a turtle with a smaller turtle on its back. First thing I bought. Kept falling in the nursing home & when he died it got lost I just want it back. All the seniors went swimming & we saw turtles in the ocean but I thought my GoPro died so I didnt record it, wish I did. My grandfather wouldve loved that

Great tips! I visited Ecuador in may of 2021 and I felt super safe! Contrary to you saying dont walk up to Virgin Mary, I did but coming down some locals told me it could be unsafe! Best way to get to know the city is by walking, but being mindful of the sketchy places. Cheers!

The thing about the toilet paper into the bowl is an urban legend. I was born in Quito and I never heard that you shouldn't put toilet paper into the toilet bowl! I did it for the 20 years that I lived there. Also tap water was fine to drink, I don't know if that has changed.

In leathertown my friend and I were talking in a square bc we had free time & a random dog came up to us and kept following us. I forget what she named it. And it protected us from a homeless man walking near us and then protected us from our friends when they joined us

Went there in 2018 my senior year on a science trip. Was there for like 1-2 days then went to the Galapagos for the remainder. Hoping islands by boat. First time in a plane (PA - Quito and first boat ride) 1 of 2 ppl that didnt fall asleep or get sick from it

when bringing money also bring change like quarters dimes nickels and pennies for buying things on the street or in local stores especially bakeries in which rolls. This is from someone with frequently goes there
