Great tips. I love the one about finding a local grocery or outside store, even a Walgreens. I remember once staying at a big conference hotel that did NOT have in room coffee, I think a pot of coffee to the room was about $20, plus plus. or get ready and wait in line at the coffee kiosk downstairs. I need my coffee before seeing humans: . So, I now bring my own Kettle, coffee, and pour over set up to make my own coffee. and. I used a big permanent marker on my kettle because one time a hotel took it because it was the same as their room service kettle! for tea! Oh, one tip that I absolutely love is to ALWAYS ALWAYS sign up for the frequent traveler program even if you think you will never come back. sometimes you get a little gift on check in or even an upgrade

Internet: HUGE DON'T! It's an open market for hackers. That's why it's very important to use your own VPN! That's not just for conference hotel stays, that's for ALL hotel stays. Use your own encrypted network!
Chow: I NEVER eat at the conference hotel. First the food generally sucks. Half the time, lunch isn't on time, when it's provided, it's been sitting around waiting. Last time I actually ate at one, on the way home, I'd see my fellow conference attendees at just about each wayside waiting to use the bathrooms! Now, I'll always go somewhere near the hotel.

Great video and some great points. Though as a former hotel General Manager, do give your membership number at check-in. Most brands now have a welcome amenity. Almost all of the brands will not give you points for your stay if your stay is paid for by a third party ( you have a credit card authorization form on file, or your room is being paid for by a master bill or by a direct bill) You will earn points on your incidentals. Basically what you get under your door as your folio will be what the basis of the points will be.

These are great this Mark. I learned so much after my first conference stay. Snacks are great but also single soups in a cup, oatmeal and single instant coffee. Great for a quick meal at a conference! I also bring a traveling clothes steamer (life saving lol) and a hot water kettle. You can imagine my surprise when my hotel had no coffee maker in room. The shuttle issue is 100 true. My sister was told her hotel had a shuttle only to learn it only ran at certain times of the day. She also had to uber everywhere.

I was an academic. My conference hotels always ended up in the best parts of town and convenient to everything. A lot has to do with your discipline. My discipline likes the lux life. Next major annual conference for my discipline is the MLA. and it's going to be in SF. and the discipline will take over about 20 hotels. in the big tourist districts. The hotel to be at is the Fairmont on Nob Hill. I can't imagine anything that is more central.

Beware the farewell Sunday breakfast buffet. I remember going to a conference once, having the breakfast on Sunday because I wanted to stay a bit longer to talk to some people before going home. A basic poached eggs, bread and rubber pancake buffet. $25 at the time, about $30 today with inflation. And it was just some $90 a night Sheraton by an airport, not a 5 star hotel.

Music City Center in Nashville TN is a great conference center. Almost everything is within walking distance of everything in the city, so bring your walking shoes if you are going to stay there. The Science Center is 20 minute walk. The Parthenon (I saw this in the video) isn't within walking distance in my opinion (50 minute walk 1 way, so Uber or the bus is your friend.

Adding another comment re: iron -- I was once at a hotel for a singing competition and we wanted to iron our costumes and the previous resident used the iron to make a grilled cheese. and there was cheese all over the iron! So glad we looked at it before we used it, OH, and there also was pizza shoved into the hair dryer. Just. why?

Oh gosh I feel the pain of #10, conference Wi-Fi from my experience is NEVER good! You'd think good connection would be a priority given people work on laptops during these things, but nope!
Thanks for the tips Mark, very helpful for when I eventually get to travel abroad for business trips again! Greetings from the UK: -)
