we head over to Mims, Florida to set out on the Indian River to do some Bioluminescent Kayaking! Nathan: Marine plankton or dinoflagellate blooms with their distinct blue color bring on summer bioluminescence in Floridas IRL( Indian River Lagoon, typically most visible after a few days of still water when the blue light is seen during the nights. Bioluminescence of dinoflagellates may be beautiful, but many of the species in this group are toxic. When dinoflagellates reproduce rapidly, they may cause so-called red tides. There are several types of neurotoxins produced by dinoflagellates. Some species, such as the sea sparkle (Noctiluca scintillans) are not as toxic, but may have other unpleasant effects. Pyrodinium bahamense blooms found in the IRL can create a poison called saxitoxin which can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP. This species has caused more human illnesses and fatalities than any other paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) producing dinoflagellate. Researchers have also found evidence of saxitoxin in liver samples from dead dolphins.
The same species also is responsible for the bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico and in those bays it doesnt produce the saxitoxin. Here in the IRL it does.
The northern end (Haulover canal) of the IRL is where it is most abundant in the lagoon because ocean water isnt flushing it at a high enough rate and may be due to low population of filter feeders in the area. The summer blueish bioluminescent glow can be seen is by kayak from Bairs Cove, from a boat ramp located on the southwest side of the Haulover Canal.

This might be one of my favorite videos from the two of you! The pure joy you were both expressing during this whole experience had me grinning from ear to ear. My husband and I are moving down to central Florida (from Southeast PA) in October and I CANNOT WAIT until we can start experiencing stuff like this ourselves! Thanks for sharing this with us.
